Eh, if the guy wants to install Vista, let him. I like it myself.

I installed Vista. It's pretty to look at.

It is next to worthless to edit with.

I'll keep it loaded on a drive, but until a service pack comes out, screw vista. If it can't even run Premiere 6.0, what use could it possibly be?

PICVideo MJPEG isn't necessary, really. Just install the full version of ffdshow (http://x264.nl/) - it comes with both an MJPEG codec and Huffyuv-YV12, which can be accessed from the VFW interface. I know from experience it works fine on Vista because I installed it for my cousin on his laptop. You'll also want to pick up Haali's Media Splitter while you're at it - just leave the options as-is when you install it; the AVI splitter isn't necessary, Windows can do that on its own.

Other than that, regular Huffyuv and Lagarith would be good to pick up also.

Vista is necessary for some. For instance, I'm happily accustomed to Mac OS X, and since Vista is basically Microsoft OS X, I appreciate its extra features over XP. That said, a lot of encoding stuff doesn't work or doesn't work well yet on Vista, so good luck.

Vista = OS X for PC + RAM whoring - Drivers

and + Halo 2, if that's really important... I'd rather play it on the XboX anyways.

And I thought that Haali's already came with the CCCP?

It does, but if you want the encoding capabilities of ffdshow's VFW, you can't use the CCCP (they provide a stripped-down decoder-only version of ffdshow that's a few months behind the current tryouts version to ensure that it's stable), so Haali's has to be installed on its own.

Thanks
