How do I split video into clips?

Postby Josakun » Mon Apr 09, 2007 12:05 am

Hello :D I'm trying to get into using Premiere but I'm having trouble splitting up my episodes into easy to use bite sized pieces in Virtual Dub could anyone help me out or point me in the direction of a tutorial or something please? Thanks in advance :P

use those to mark the beginning and the end of the "clips" you want so you can save room

This also does a good job explaining... well, everything: http://www.animemusicvideos.org/guides/avtechbeta/

hmm this isn't cool I have another problem. I was splitting up my clips and everything into a folder and about 3 quarters the way through I came up against an error message my hard drive was full the file with the clips was 7gig. I know I'm running low on disk space but still 7 gig for 1/3 of an episodeis a bit mush is it possible to split these clips in a more space efficient way?

Unfortunately, that's how things go. Lossless codec files are very large. 7GB for 3/4 of an episode actually sounds very good. Now, if you're getting your footage from DVDs, then you can actually skip the clip making process and just make fake AVI files using VFAPIConv (described here: http://www.animemusicvideos.org/guides/avtechbeta/videogetbmeth2.html#mozTocId201615). However, if your footage is from the... hmm, I'll call it "unconventional" source, then there isn't really anything (that I know of) that you can do.

O, I just remembered that you're using Premiere, so for DVD footage the fake avi files are unnecessary, since Premiere can take .avs files (described here: http://www.animemusicvideos.org/guides/avtechbeta/videogetbmeth2.html#mozTocId295338)

Either smaller clips like Jadd said, or actually harvest scenes you think will be useful. Cut out the rest of the things you know you probably won't use. If you use those scene markers over the parts you don't want and press delete, it will cut off those bits when you finally go ahead and render an output.

Thanks everyone I'll have to have a look at those links tomorrow it's kinda late here now. Oh and my problem wasn't that the files were too long I had about 32 files when I got up to the 3/4 mark they wern't very long at all it took me an hour to get that far before I got the full computer error message. For the AMV I had in mind I may be able to cut out certain parts but I'll try the links from WC Annihilus first thanks again
