did XVID die?

Postby kearlywi » Thu Oct 09, 2003 9:59 pm

I have been a happy user of the xvid codec for a long time. I have used it to encode between 50 to 100 episodes of anime, and its great. However recently, XVID has failed to properly encode the last 5 or so videos in a row (from various video sources, not just one DVD). Here are some of the symptoms:

Lots of frame dropping, video files are averaging about 6 fps of actual frames instead of 30 or 24.

Much higher tendency to freeze up media playing device (wmp, realone, etc.)

ALWAYS freezes when entering full screen mode (in any players).

Higher likely hood to fall out of sync (as a result of freezes)

These symptoms have only occured recently for no apparent reason. No other codec has these problems. I have not installed any new software or codecs. I use the exact methods as detailed in EADFAG (i.e. two pass method, etc.).

My first instinct in these situations is to try experimenting with other settings. No luck. Then I tried re-installing xvid (I wasnt able to uninstall so I just installed a 2nd time). No change.

If anyone knows how to fix this problem... or at least how to fully uninstall xvid, please let me know.

Another small question. How do you get the "classic film" effect in premiere? [classic film is not actual name, its just my name for it]. By classic film I don't mean black and white, I mean a snow type effect that film reels (especially old ones) have. The effect was featured in VICBONDS die another day vid and also episode 3 of LOVE HINA (the Motoko classic silent film episode).

For the second question with the old film effect, you can either experiment with bitmaps and stuff, or you can use the Quicktime FILM effect...for the first question, what build are you using? I've got uManiac's 7/17 unstable build and it works fine...that's what I used to encode the video for my MP4 of my NES track

Thanks for answering the effect question.

The build is Koepi's build, the exact name of the setup file is:

"XviD-04102002-1.exe"

I want to again stress that in the past this same codec has worked perfectly, and in fact earlier tonight I got it to do a decent job encoding an episode of berserk (I stress DECENT, it still froze up 4 times, and recovered within a second or two, 3 times).

You may want to try one of the newer 'unstable' build releases. They aren't unstable at all :)

If you install a new build make sure to click "load defaults" in the encoder settings before setting your preferred options.

That should solve most issues with the encoder.

Yep, In Premiere's effects, click "Quicktime effects" wait for them to load, go to "Old film effect" then just adjust how many scratches and hairs you want. =p

As for the lagage and encoding probs in your video, I don't know.
Although, if it freezes in a player, your music and video could be different frame rates.

I was having the same problems with XviD, just the other day infact, testing my vid segment to get my settings all figured out. I couldnt figure out what the heck was up, audio de-syncing, freezing up, etc. Then I just started experamenting with different settings, with the audio and xvid settings in V-Dub... then I got it to somehow work.

I used the same settings in AD + ErMaC's guide for XviD and then, when adding the audio, set it to 192kbps CBR instead of 160kbps ABR and then it worked perfectly. If your doing full episodes Im dont think you would be using 192kbps for your audio, right, so maybe try that out?

Well I fixed my xvid problem. I downloaded the unstable build, then downloaded the newest version of Windows Media Player, then downloaded the newest version of Divx (with GAIN and GATOR, yuck). After using spybot to cleanse my computer, I got xvid to work although now my computer runs a lot slower, namely my movie players. I know its probably gain/gator ressurected, so I'll probably be able to return things to normal in the next few days.

I have problems with XVID too, but they generally involve absurdly large amounts of artificing, or spontaneous magentafication of parts of the screen. Or completely upside-down images. And people say DivX has bugs...

DivX does have bugs. It sucks, too!

XviD works fine for everybody BUT you, Monarch, so quit bitching and fix your problems.

It has happened on everything from 160x120 to 720x480.

As for Nicky, I know that other people have bitched about the same upside-down encoding problem, so it's NOT just me.

It's the decoder's problem, not Xvid's.
