Idealy, the best resolution to play a movie at would be the exact resolution that it is encoded in. Thus, if you're watching a 512x384 movie you want to be in that resolution...

Of course that isn't terribly feasable. So what to do? Well, in reality the scaling algorithms of most Directshow players and filters are good enough that it doesn't really matter all that much once you get above 1024x768. That would be the minimum resolution I'd want to watch things in, and if I was watching DVDs I'd actually rather be in 1280x1024 since then you get a pretty good 2:1 upsizing (except in horizontal direction where you have to scrunch to get your aspect ratio back to normal).

Lately I'v been encoding and releasing in larger fomats with decent file sizes... 320x240 doesn't do it for me anymore...I'll use it if I have too ^^

From what I understand his question was not which resolution to encode things at, but which resolution to VIEW them at, thus the word "play" in his original message.
