About SVCD resolution...

Postby jasper-isis » Mon Sep 22, 2003 5:19 pm

When encoding an MPEG-2 for NTSC SVCD, should I enter a custom size for the source video so that it doesn't get stretched out, top to bottom, upon playback? (Thus leaving black bars on top and bottom of the video.) Or does playback of an SVCD automatically correct the stretched resolution?

SVCD is kind of auto-anamorphic. That is, the resolution is only 480x480 (which looks squished vertically) but it's automatically 3/2ed horizontally up to 720x480 on playback. So take your full image as it should be at whatever resolution, and just resize to 480x480, don't worry about the squishing, it's how it's supposed to be. Just as long as resizing it from 480x480 to it's original 4:3 aspect will yeild a normal looking image.
