Premiere, duplicate clip crash problem

Postby kearlywi » Mon Sep 01, 2003 6:11 pm

I'm making smaller clips of my avi files for faster editing. However, every third clip freezes Premiere at the duplicate clip save step, eventually causing a crash. With a lot of persistence and re loading of premiere, I can eventually get the clip to save without freezing up premiere, but it goes without saying that it is an extreme pain in the ass.

I am running Winamp (and absolutely nothing else (cept the basic windows programs you have to run)). I have yet to install update 6.02, although in its description it said nothing of fixing this particular bug. If closing winamp or patch 6.02 DO work, I'll post again. In the meantime, If anyone has additional pointers...

I had this same problem with Premiere, I haven't "fixed it" so to speak, but doing the following has cut down on the crashes considerably:

First, as a precaution, set the Auto-save to one minute. Then, every time you do something halfway significant, SAVE THE PROJECT. All it takes is a very quick CTRL-S to make sure that when Premiere does have a temper tantrum, it doesn't take you with it.

1. That said, I found keeping my timeline free of clutter is helpful, at least in the collecting footage process. After every clip you add to the project and before setting up markers for the next, clear the timeline. It's a pain, but reloading Premiere and/or your computer is even more of a pain.

2. Restart your computer before trying to use Premiere and don't run any other programs (including Winamp)!

3. Premiere doesn't like it when I fail to change a clip name in the timeline BEFORE adding it to a bin and changing its name for the bin, as well. In fact, it's usually when I forget to do this that the program crashes. Why this is two seperate steps from the get-go seems rather silly, there should be a default setting for naming clips, IMO, that can be changed later as necessary.

That's all for now... and I'm really not sure if any of this (except the restarting thing) actually is influencing my crash-rate. If anyone has any other tips (other than Premiere is crash-prone) I'd love to know them, too!

yup I was pretty much already doing those things too. I downloaded the newest patch and restarted after installing it. I closed down all other programs. It still crashes as much as ever, which is about 40% of the time i save a clip. If I change the name of the file, the crash rate is EVEN higher.

Fortunately, I only have to make a few clips (a few meaning roughly less than 100). I have managed to stay on premieres good side and have kept crashes to a relative minimum, with the exeption of the save clips debacle. I swear its almost worse now than it was before.

Anyway, theres only one way it will ever get better, and thats through lots of angry letters to Adobe. Hopefully they will figure it out someday and release a patch to fix it, because its a nasty problem. This is the first video editing problem I have ever closed the book on without solving it. Oh well, its really just an annoyance.

Premiere doesn't jusr crash by itself. Different codecs make it crash. Hence use only one codec, better yet a lossless one. Premiere has never crashed on me ever since. :?

Premiere does too crash by itself.

Some things just make it more likely to happen. I've had several crashes using nothing but huffyuv clips and uncompressed audio.

Save. frequently.

Have you seen his Dragonbizkits one? Its DBZ+Rollin(Limp Bizkit), and Its pretty good. Although I reckon he should make an X music video, so all those people huge on X (like me, teehee, check out my new vid: http://www.animemusicvideos.org/members/members_videoinfo.php?v=23630

Hey, Dark Kamui you check out that vid too, wouldya? Wanna see if I did justice to your namesake [although your avatar is technically wrong, but meh :P  :P should be fuma....] )

Yes. He should make an X video too I reckon.

But back on topic. Use the PicMJPEG codec (mentioned in the guides) and you should get really good performance.

I already was using pic video's MJPEG. I'm following the guide to the letter. It still crashes at random every 25 minutes approximately. Gotta love autosave. Dont care much if it crashes now.

I'll check out those AMVs.

I do, when it works. That was one of my first and by far most evil encounters with the whims of Premiere - let's just say that I told it to autosave every minute, and it interpreted that command as "let's crash every minute and pretend her autosave command was never applied" so that, 20 minutes later and another crash later, I discover all my recent work was not saved - multiply this experience by three and you'll see what a pain in the butt it was.

And as far as Premiere crashing for no reason - I'm sure it has a reason, it just doesn't usually let us in on it for fear of additional verbal abuse.

What would make you madder? Premiere taking down your computer without an explanation or Premiere admitting it doesn't like the violent subject matter in the clip you're trying to save and believes it has an ethical duty to discourage such negative images by any means necessary?

You see, there is no need to actually create computer AI, we already give computers waayyy too much leeway for personal expression.

hehe.

Yup I had a similar problem. Sometimes when Premeire crashes at random and I reload my project I find out (the hard way) that for some reason the auto save funtion turns itself off at random. So I have to check it every time I load the program.

But still, autosave has saved my ass more than it has burned it.
