sometimes its because the compressor you are using for your project previews is incompatible with the AVI footage. I've had odd occasions where XviD refuses to work, where Indeo footage (never again) renders as either black screen or technicolour static, and I've had really, really REALLY choppy video. If your footage is DivX 5.02 or XviD with the DivX 4CC, then try using DV codecs for the previews, either PAL or NTSC, depending on your location and the footage format. Thats what works for me. Yeah, the file sizes for the scratch disks will make you puke, but its reasonably fast, plus you can just delete the preview files when you're done.
