Why wont anything I try work correctly?

Postby Kelin » Tue Jul 08, 2003 9:16 pm

I am having some major problems watching stuff on my comp, AMV's, AVI backups, etc. It all used to work when i was running XP. I just formatted my HD and installed Win2k, and now no matter what I do, my vids never run correctly. Sure, some run, but then i have block noise problems, choppy frames, excessive skipping on files run from CD-roms. I have tried everything I can possibly think of. Multiple codec packs, (Nimo used to run just fine under XP with the Ffdshow fix), installing individual codecs, uninstalling everything then working with WMP alone with sound codecs, getting the video from the auto updates. I've even uninstalled everycodec for sure by searching for .ax files. This is only a brief description because I'll be AFK for a couple hours, but can someone please help, maybe someone else has freshly installed 2000 and got the same problems. Also, when Nimo is installed, after selecting the DivX 5.02 or whatever filter, it says someting about an error about how the divx5.reg file couldn't be opened from the TEMP directory, or something like that. I must have wasted at least 10 hours trying all sorts of different methods, I'm not new to this. But this is just annoying the @#$% out of me.

---at wits end, please help before i accept it and move on

Have you updated to or reinstalled the most recent video drivers for your video card?

1) Win2k has a "bug" where it automatically sets your CD drives to PIO mode.

Go to device manager, select the IDE channel your CD/DVD is on, and under the advanced tab, select "use DMA if Avilable". That should clear up a lot of skipping from CD. PIO is slow as hell, and eats processing power like a mofo.

2) NIMO is evil. Don't ever install it.

Get:

the latest Divx version from the official site.

ffdshow

divx 3.11, or at least the "radium" audio codec (just hacked mp3 is all it is.)

that should take care of 90%+ of your playback needs.

I've heard stories on NIMO not uninstalling properly, so you may be screwed, and have to reinstall windows to clean it out.
