Working With D2V In Premiere

Ok, I read ermacs guide and I thought I followed everything perfectly, then I got a black screen in the monitor, so I changed the numbers in the avs file and it is still black. I did everything acording to the guide and have all of the necessary software so please help.

Another thing when I save to AVI in DVD2AVI and compress it with huffy all I get is a fuzzy scrambled screen, it works fing if I compress it with the low motion codec but it is way lower quality.

OK... for the avisynth stuff...

I would suggest resizing your VOBs to 360 x 240.
Just add a line in your avisynth script that says this:

BilinearResize(360,240)

That will make the files much easier to work with in Premiere.

Make sure that you set your project settings (under Video) in Premiere are set to Square Pixels and also have them set to 720 x 480 (or 360 x 240 if you resized it). Expand the monitor window until the numbers say 720 x 480 (or 360 x 240). The picture should appear. If you're using 720 x 480, I know I had to take off the dual monitor window in order to stretch it big enough. And make sure that when you export your project, you have those settings set to Square Pixels and 360 x 240 as well otherwise you'll have a black screen when you play it back.

With the saving to avi thing... I don't know what's going on there... Huffyuv is known to do some pretty weird things sometimes. But if you're using avisynth, you won't be needing the huffyuv files. It'll save space if you use avisynth instead.

I, too, read the guide, but after neary 90 minutes of messing with my avisynth script, I got frustrated and got my footage another way.

Using Smartripper, I deselected everything but the video stream under the streams processing tab, checked the "demux to separate file" box, and let it run. When it finished, I changed the extension on the resulting file from .m2v to .mpg, so premiere would recognize it.

Boom, one full DVD res soundless movie @ 29.97fps, easily opened in Premiere, no problems. I'l use an area based deinterlacer or whatever on it after my vid is complete.

Get virtualdub, test the AVS script in there, it should work, if it doesn't then it will give you some sort of error, post back with the error.

Now in Premiere, have you set the pixel aspect to Square Pixels 1.0?
Are the video settings set to the proper resolution.

If the video is 720x480, video settings must be 720x480 w/ Square pixels 1.0 pixels.

If you're using ReduceBy2() or BiLinearResize(360,240), then make sure you also set the video to 360x240.

You can also try and drag the avs file into Media player, if there's a error with script then it will display big red letters describing the error

Premiere can't edit mpeg 2.

Unless it can utilise a direct show filter *goes to do some tests*

See, Premiere doesnt have mpeg2 support. However, I forgot that Premiere 6 likes to do things via Direct Show.

It is possible to install Direct Show filters for mpeg2 playback in windows, and it is likely that you have done this at some point wither with a codec pack or whatever.

In any case, I have double checked and confirmed that you can, in fact, open up mpeg2 video streams if you have the Elecard MPEG Video Decoder direct show filters installed.

You can get the Elucard decoder filters from here.

I don't really know if anyone else is aware of this, as I've never seen anyone use this method but you are indeed correct.

I don't know how stable it is though, I'm checking that now.

OK, the Elucard filters suck.

Well, they have a logo in the corner and wehn exporting the video the frames jump back and forth like nobody's business.

So, I'll have to try other filters.

I know you can register powerdvd and windvd filters to work so I'm going to try those. If anyone else has some working mpeg2 filters that are stable for this kind of work then post them here.

Personally, I doubt whether this method can really be very stable during intensive editing. I have a feeling they will crash when using multiple files, but it's worth testing.

I believe you're right about premiere glomming off the DVD software's filter. I noted this line in the helpfile of my DVD authoring software:

Included Cyberlink's PowerDVD player. MyDVD uses this player to decode MPEG-2 video streams; you can also use it to play DVDs.
Note: We have also included an installer for Ligos' LSX-MPEG player. This player fixes several problems with video playback; please see the Known Issues section for more information, especially if you use Windows NT.

Sure enough, it shows that LIGOS decoder being used to decode it in WMP properties.

When I opened the .mpg file across the network on my other machine with WMP, it shows the powerDVD codec as being used.

Seems one should be able to get it to work if you have DVD playback software installed.

I'm only using the one movie for this vid, but hey, once you can open an mpeg2 file in Premiere, you can chop out and transcode whatever you want to the codec of your choice, ne?
I'm just using the movie as one big file, setting rough ins and outs in the clip window and dragging them to the timeline.
I'm rendering previews in Huffyuv.
No instabilities noted so far.
