Adobe Premiere Transition Tutorials

Postby bluelife2128 » Mon May 05, 2003 2:33 pm

OK, I'm sorry but I have to ask this. I am going insane not finding anything... but, does anyone know where I could get some tutorials for good Adobe premiere TRANSITIONS. I've seen transitions on videos that are pretty cool. Like in Trythils video "Always" featuring Sarah brightmans second element to evangelions. SO COOL. And yes, I did ask trythil, he says I should find these things on my own. (Learning experience) Please help me out. TY

The adobe premiere Manual is a great guide.

HINT: Video Tracks 1A and 1B....it's not that fucking hard.

Well TokyoU15, I think he meant transitions other than the included Adobe ones.

Trythil used a bunch of "basic" effects to make seemingly complex transitions. Unfortunately Premiere lacks a bunch of what it looks like he did.

Well, I haven't seen tyrthil's new video, I mean he didn't make himself clear enough
for good Adobe premiere TRANSITIONS.

Easily confused. [/b]

I thought that was the whole point of effect work. You start with a few core elements and combine them in weird ways...

...but yeah, the trick is having enough free time to sit there and tweak keyframes for (x,y,z) coordinates for camera and projector settings, compositing modes, color adjustments, keying settings, and various convolutions until you get exactly what you want. I've yet to find anything that I can't emulate with a few elements (even though it's a major pain in the ass at times).

Failing that, I draw it. Photoshop's Paintbrush tool and I got into a really interesting love-hate relationship. And I really want a WACOM. Drawing with a mouse sucks.

The process (for me, anyway) usually involves a lot of time spent rendering out small 5-second test sequences, since my machine is hardly fast enough (and has no special hardware) to do anything in real time, and I have absolutely no visual conception ability whatsoever.

Something else:

Fancy transitions, more often than not, suck. They look corny and they usually don't add anything to the video. The furthest I suggest anyone go is cross-dissolve.

For example, the only reason why Lucas can get away with the otherwise horribly-cheesy feathered wipe in Star Wars is because people expect that kind of horribly-cheesy-saga feel.

All I'm wanting is some tutorials or explenations of how to do a few transitions that will entertain veiwers a little more that simple rubberband fades. klinky is right... Trythil even said it himself thathe just used a bunch of simple filters to make his affects. But only thing is, Trythil doesn't even use premiere. It's probably not all that much different... but my point is, I just want to make a decent video... I don't have time to get a major in premiere(no matter how much I would love to). It seems that at times once I go through a tutorial, I also learn other veriations of the application I'm working with. please, if any of you have or know of tutorials or explanations of some good transitions effects I would appreciate it.

Your best bet is to thoroughly learn Photoshop and Premiere, and maybe Aftereffects if youre brave, and then watch a couple of your favorite AMV's, or even MTV if youre bored enough, and seee what you like in a good transition. I learned that my favorite transition was a straight cut for fast music, and a mild fade for slow music. Of course, you can always build on these basic things to make magnificent transitions, such as the Glow-Fade, Blur out, and others. Good luck to you.

Actually, I've tried both, and Cinelerra's a hell of alot different than Premiere. It's like using a normal keyboard all your life and then being tossed a Dvorak keyboard...that displays the braille equivalent of what you're typing.

I dunno, it seems intuitive to me. It really feels like a meld between After Effects and Premiere.

And practice a lot with some short clips. See what you can do and see what kind of unique things you can think up while tinkering with the program.

Experimentation is the best way to learn just about anything, especially if you don't have a 'guru' around who can teach you in person. Fiddle around with a couple of junk clips and go through and try out all the transitions to see what they do (if you've got the time). And don't think that you're limited to the transitions that are coded into the program. Especially if you throw After Effects and Photoshop into the mix, if you can think of it, you can do it (though it may take some time). The most powerful tool in video editing isn't one on the computer- it's your imagination.

Questions about transitions

Postby Jason 00 » Wed May 07, 2003 9:10 pm

Here is a site with some info on creating transitions and other effects within Adobe Premiere 6.0 and 6.5 (like there is really any difference)
It will give you some ideas and then you can take it from there.
