23.976 to 29.97 fps and more

Postby Yogurtron » Mon Apr 28, 2003 2:27 am

Alright, I've prolly asked more than my share of questions about framerates in the past, but I have yet another one. I'm following Ermac's / AbsoluteDestiny's guide to making an AMV, so it comes out in a nice 23.976 framerate. Problem is tho, one thing i want to do with this, is submit it to Anime-Expo's contest, which requires 29.97 framerate in the DV codec at 740*480 resolution.

I plan on exporting this the way ermac/absolutedestiny say, and end up with my nice 23.976 file stile at 720*480 resolution. (i guess at that time it'll be huffyuv, so i can make one copy for web distribution, and one for Con distribution from it). How safe (as far as video quality is concerned) to re-encode a 23.976 HuffYUV to a 29.97 DV AVI? And if it isn't very safe, what can i do about it?

My other question, is, as far as con's go, is there a special DV Codec i should be using? I know i've heard of some proprietary DV codecs (DVPro, to name one off the top of my head)... and was just wondering what would be workable.. i think i have standard DV here... maybe not.... how can i get Virtual Dub or something to take my HuffYUV and make it into a DV AVI for AX?

It's easy.

Once you have a 23.976fps file, you can make it a DV-compatible 29.97fps file using avisynth by adding the following lines:

AssumeFrameBased
ComplementParity
SeparateFields
SelectEvery(8, 0,1, 2,3,2, 5,4, 7,6,7)
Weave

This will do telecine on your progressive source and be fully NTSC compatible.

I *think* DV is top field first, so the above script should be correct.

As for DV codecs, I'm really not sure.

Actually, DV is lower field first. But, I'm not sure what changes need to be made to the above AVS script. :(

Delete the "ComplementParity" statement and things should be fine, assuming each frame is bottom-dominant.

As far as DV goes...if you can find a free DV codec, that should work just fine. I have an implementation of Sony's DV codec in transcode; I also have a copy of Panasonic's DV codec for Windows that I grabbed off the Web (not sure if it's legal to do so, but meh, it was floating around, so finders keepers ;) ) I can't remember where I snagged it from, though; Google around for it :(

Damn, I always forget which way round it goes.

Yeah, delete complimentparity and the script will work bottom field first.

I hope you got it done, I think they want the videos in by May 10th, with a postmark of April 29th, which as of this posting, is tomorow. (I just got back from sending mine off)

I used the DV export in Premiere, which came with the program.

VHS and DV is lower field first

DVD and MJPEG is upper field first

the rest tend to be what ever the implimentation wants to be

makes it hell for the large group projects like DDR

A Panasonic free DV codec can be found here. I've used it a few times and seems to work well.
