Oi, don't hurt me? A newbie question on DVD ripping.

Yes, I have searched around the site. It's possible I missed it but, on the offchance that I didn't, I want to ask ...
Is it possible to rip DVDs without a DVD-rom or DVD-burner? I have neither of these things, at the present, though I am working on getting a burner for my birthday later this month.
One of the reasons I thought of asking is because a friend of mine mentioned that her step-father has a program on his computer that allows him to rip DVDs into AVIs and then he burns them onto VCDs. And he only has a CD-burner.

Nope. You need some sort of disc drive with DVD capability in order to rip DVDs...

I doubt that... your standard CD-burner/CD-drive can't even read a DVD unless it's a DVD drive. He might have one of those DVD/CD-burner drives which is a nice little combo that enables him to use the drive to read DVDs and burn CD-Rs...

no
her stepfather is lying
seriously :O it's impossible, a CD drive uses a 780nm red laser to read/write, whereas DVD uses 650nm red laser. Aside from that the numerical apeture is different as is the pit spacing/size, meaning a CD laser couldn't possibly fit to read a DVD's bits. :\

I wasn't talking about combo drives, regular CD-ROM and CD-R/RW drives are clearly the issue at hand
