Dark footage help?

I'm currently working on a video where a section of footage is really dark. I've tried fiddling with brightness and gamma correction effects in Premiere, but I'm never happy with the color after such effects have been used. Any suggestions?

have you tried changing the levels?

Thanks for the suggestion. I didn't really get very far, though I fiddled to hell with it. Anyway, I've gone back to using gamma correction which gives me the best possible results as far as I can tell.
