Haven't Edited For A While....Forgot How to Script....lol

Post by TwilightChrono » Fri Sep 19, 2014 4:30 am

I've been getting back into editing recently. I've taken a Hiatus as work was far more important. I realized today that as I went to open up VDub I was drawing a blank as I looked at the script editor.

I still remember what all the filters do. I've just forgotten how to type them in. And when it comes to the part where I say it can locate the File: Ex. ("C:/ program files, blah blah").......I realized I forgot how to write that out and WHAT format it needs to be in for it to do so.

I can't remember how to crop properly without ruining AR.

I can't remember how to well.....write anything in anymore or what order they need to go in. I guess I should just chalk it up to age or the fact I've been spoiled by CS6 or whatever other excuse I can think of.......Work.....I blame work, yeah...that's it.

Anywho........I guess what I am asking for is a reminder from my friends here at the org. Can you guys help?

If you're having issues with AviSynth my AviSynth 101 could help you out with that.

When you need to crop and then resize, if you don't feel like using a good aspect ratio calculator, the best piece of advice I can give is to keep the crop amounts multiple of your input storage aspect ratio. That way you won't have to get a headache even if you have a flagged source, since you'll also be keeping the same display aspect ratio assuming no change is made to the pixel aspect ratio (or if you're compensating for it).

Let's say you have a 1440x1080 (4:3 storage aspect ratio) video with a 4:3 pixel aspect ratio flag, so effectively 1920x1080 during playback (16:9 display aspect ratio).
If you crop 8 horizontally and 6 vertically from the 1440x1080 source you get a 1432x1074 video, which maintains the 4:3 storage aspect ratio. If we apply the 4:3 pixel aspect ratio we get 1432*4/3 horizontally, so about 1909x1074, which is roughly 16:9 still (it should be 1909.333... with the ar flag, so technically if you could have a subpixel precision when displaying content you'd be perfect).

Another example.

We have a 720x480 NTSC DVD, with a widescreen flag. That means, following the ITU standard, that our video has a 40:33 pixel aspect ratio, which means playback at roughly 872x480.
As the AVTECH suggests, we need to crop 8 from both horizontal sides, which means effectively 16 pixels cropped horizontally. This ends up to 704x480, that means about 853x480 with a 40:33 pixel aspect ratio, which is essentially 16:9 display aspect ratio. If we resize this to a precise 16:9 resolution, we don't have any distortion. Keep in mind that 848x480 is NOT a perfect 16:9 resolution (that's more like 853x480, so 854x480 is the closest thing). If you want to resize to 848x480, you should overcrop some more before resizing!
