What's the difference between DVD-R and DVD+R?

Postby Bushido Philosopher » Fri Mar 21, 2003 6:52 pm

I've been wondering about this since some drives accept DVD+Rs only and some only DVD-Rs.

And also please list the difrence between DVD-RW and DVD+RW if that matters.

DVD-R is a non-rewriteable format and it is compatible with about 88% of all DVD Players and DVD-ROMs.
DVD-RW is a rewriteable format and it is compatible with about 69% of all DVD Players and DVD-ROMs.

DVD+R is a non-rewritable format and it is compatible with about 84% of all DVD Players and DVD-ROMs.
DVD+RW is a rewritable format and is compatible with about 70% of all DVD Players and DVD-ROMs.

damn....those numbers are TOO close. what to do.... :(

Get whichever's cheaper. :D

Or, just get one that supports both. I think Toshiba makes a really nice one that does both +R and -R.

Not necessarily, and not necessarily. And I suggest you post links to your evidence for making such a claim.

I'm very happy with my Sony DRU-500a all-format drive.

I'm finding pretty good prices on both 2x DVD-R and 2.4x DVD+R discs, now that 4x discs are appearing. The Sony seems to like the +R discs slightly better, and I appreciate the modest speed boost over the 2x discs.

My DVD players both play either kind of disc with no trouble, so I can't comment much on compatibility.

DVD+RW does have built in error correction capabilities that all three other variants lack, so I choose to use that for really critical backups that I want to last a long time.

That said, if price is your primary issue, it seems hard to beat some of the cheap DVD-R only drives out there, but if you have the bucks, a multi-format writer like the Sony gives you the most flexibility for finding what works with your set-top player, and for taking advantage of whatever bargains on media you are able to find.

That and a nickel is worth five cents, kid.

You do realize that, without evidence to back up your opinion, your advice is worthless.

I have evidence, its just a pain in the ass to search out. The basis is that the person will take the advice of the knowledged person without needing proof of this knowledge.
You do realize that generally thats what advice is, passing on of knowledge from one person to another without citation.

People distributing worthwhile advice are able to explain why they believe it, rather than just saying "I'm too lazy to tell you why I believe this, but I'm absolutely right, and if you don't believe me you're stupid."

I didnt say that :\

If you want me to explain I can, but the basis of advice is opinion, opinion dosent always require backing evidence, especially in a trusted environment. Since we're all friends & lovers here, I was just being more casual and less proffessional.
Proffessional advice vs casual advice. WHO WILL WIN.
I'll state my reasons for believing dvd-r is better than dvd+r later, after I get sick of playing starcraft.
