ffdshow

Are ffdshow and ffdshow-alpha two entirely different things? Because according to this, the newest version of ffdshow came out last June and the newest version of the alpha came out this January. And I thought, aren't alphas supposed to come before regular releases?

And what's the difference between the two?

The alpha is the development version of a stable full release that will come out sometime in the future.... so it is before a release :)

It has more features than the regular stable release and I've had no real problems with it (except that not all of the new features work yet).

ffdshow is a decoding and postprocessing filter that works with a variety of mpeg 4 sources, from MSmpeg4v2 & 3, to Divx & XviD, it also allows realtime adjustments of stuff like hue, saturation, noise, deblocking in realtime from its control panel.

Have captures of washed-out VHS fansubs of shows that have never been released domestically? mess with hue & saturation to get the colors to look better. A little macroblocking? mess with some of those settings, or even add a little luma noise to give it more of a soft "film" kind of look.

It's also a fairly efficient filter, and can reduce processor load while playing video, particularly when not using too much postprocessing.

best things about ffdshow:
-immense number of postprocessing options
-can be set to adjust postprocessing dynamically based on CPU usage, so you can get max quality without worrying about synch loss like with the divx decoder
-decodes msmpeg4 1-3, DivX 3-5, XviD, DV, Huffyuv, raw video, mpeg 1 & 2, and wmv (mpeg & wmv still in development tho)
-more postprocessing options
