48Khz or 44.1KHz?

Postby Bushido Philosopher » Thu Mar 06, 2003 4:47 am

I know that gnerally 48000 Hz is better since it takes more samples of the audio per every second, but I was wondering if for AVI encoding that either a high bitrate 44100 stream or a low bitrate 48000 is better?

I've noticed that the same amount of datarate on the LAME MP3 codec settings that it's the same no matter the frequency. So does this mean that it levels out as far as quality goes? I mean, is 192kb/sec for 32000 Hz pretty much the same as 192kb/sec for 48000 Hz?

The trick is to not convert it.

CDs are 44.1KHz

DVDs are 48KHz

Always keep the same samplerate as your source.

For more detailed information on why, read the audio theory guides.

Right. As far as compression goes Hz ~ resolution. The higher resolution you have the more bits you need to compress it. So a 44.1khz stream at 128kbps would sound better compression wise than a 48khz stream at 128kbps.

And, don't forget, a 48KHz stream converted to 44.1KHz and then compressed at 128Kbps will most likely sound worse than a 48KHz stream compressed at 48KHz at 128Kbps, due to the conversion artifacting.
