Is XviD better than DivX?

Postby SS5_Majin_Bebi » Thu Feb 20, 2003 6:21 pm

Is XviD any better than DivX? I mean, all they did was transpose the letters. Another Q,(although im probably askin for it...) what the hell does "quantize" mean. and what setting should it be at for good quality. If its in the guides, just say read the guides. I might have missed it.

Yep, I'd say xvid is definately better than Divx. It's far more configurable, is better at hitting desired filesize, it's more in line with the mpeg-4 standard, and it produces slightly better looking video. It's only a win-win situation if you ask me.
The easiest way to explain quantization without getting technical, is as how much a frame is compressed. Divx and Xvid use quantizers ranging from 1 to about 31 or so. At quantizer 1, you have pretty much perfect quality, and quite large filesize. At quantizer 31, you have a hardly recognizable picture, but very very small filesize. At 100% quality encodes in divx or xvid, they will use quantizer 2 instead of quantizer 1. This is because quantizer 2 produces significantly smaller frames than quantizer 1 does, and the difference is usually not noticable to the human eye.

ah.

O shit. That first Eva ep i was encoding this morning at about 700 kbps (XviD) was quantizer 1!!

So u reckon just use the quality setting, set to 100%?ill give that a try.

i dont quite understand the question....Im ripping the DVDs, and i discovered i dont have enough hard drive sapce for all the raw VOB files, so i HAVE to compress them. I was experimenting with episode 1 of Evangelion, because i have a problem with the AV synchronisation. for some reason the video lags just behind the sound, maybe .25 to .5 of a second, and the "Synchronise Audio/Video" checkbox in DVD-X doesnt make a difference either way.

Dude. if it's 700kbps its NOT QUANT 1
quantizer mode is totally different from both the vbr and cbr encoding modes. There is no such thing as a bitrate when encoding by quantizer, each frame is compressed differently. Not to mention that quant 1 usually comes out to what would be the equivalent of like 13,300 kbps.

Whether divx is better than xvid is up in the air. You can look at the codec comparisonI did and try to make your own conclusions. I'd say theyre about equal, the reason AD and Ermac reccomend XviD in the guides is because it's ~ quality, more tweakable, and its open source and free unlike DivX 5.
XviD is just DivX reversed because its a spin off of OpenDivX or project mayo; after DivX 3.11's days as an illegal codec were up, an original sourced (not cracked from something else), open DivX codec was developed. This went off in a few directions, only one remaining still open source, XviD. The other spinoffs were 3ivX, and DivX 4 and 5 which became a liscenced codec under "DivX Networks"
Quantizing relates to compression. The higher the quantizer, the more compression on a frame and the more details lost. The lower the quantizer, the less compression. Quant 1 dosen't compress much, which is why Quant 2 is usually the maximum that is ever used, since its the first level of actual compression.

if you want to understand video tech, search around on the zillions of sites full of info on it. Who knows, it might some day end you up in a one-year college after only taking 11 years of school and land you in an awesome fucking high paying job

you never know :thumbs up to digital multimedia major:

oh, god dont remind me! That was actually 12 years for me (here in Australia we have Grades 1 thru 12) so im halfway there. I hope i get a firm grasp of this before the end of the year, coz im interested in takin a multimedia course at Morningside TAFE (morningside is a suburb of Brisbane, the capital of Queensland, where i live, for those of u who dont know)

oh we've got 12 years too, but the colleges I'm looking at are top of the line and they still accept 10 years + a GED. I'm thinking about dropping after junior year (next year for me)

eh wait.. you're only in 6th grade o.O
