Is FPS still important for online vs. convention distribution?

Post by BadgerKing » Tue Jan 26, 2016 12:45 pm

Just curious how outdated the guides are in this case - my footage I plan to use is currently at 23.976. I could do the AssumeFPS to make all of it 29.97, but I'm assuming that it's not necessarily a big deal anymore to submit a video to a convention at 23.976. And is it still preferable to upload a video for online distribution at 23.976, or does it really not matter anymore if it's that or 29.97?

It usually only matters in that you're not working with (or submiting, or uploading) interlaced or telecined footage. If you have native 30fps footage, then by all means use it.

Always ask when you're submitting to contests, though. While most people are just copy & pasting other contest's tech specs into their rules or reusing the same rule sets again and again years after they were ever even considered, there are a few folks that cling to very specific hardware playback rigs that need specific encoding parameters to be present to work.

Hmmm....ok. Since the footage is native 23.976, do you recommend just sticking with that, or changing it to 29.97 before I start editing? I'm not sure if doing the AssumeFPS for it after the entire thing has been edited is the best choice (would that somehow mess up the audio?), should 29.97 be preferable.

That's how I've been doing it for the past decade or so, so yea. A lot of stuff is animated at even less than 24fps and just frame-duplicated to even get there.
