Out of the ones already mentioned I would consider Tool, Opeth, A Perfect Circle, Amon Amarth, and Angelspit as some of my favorites. Others would be

The Cure
Image
Genre:Punk, Post-Punk, New Wave(past). Alternative, New Wave(current).
Years Active:1976 - present
Origin:Crawley, United Kingdom

Current Members:
Robert Smith (1976 - present) [Vocalist, guitarist, bassist, piano, drums, trumpet, and trombone] (Mostly just vocalist and guitarist, in various albums he plays many different instruments though)
Simon Gallup (1979 - 1982) (1984 - present) [Keyboardist, acoustic guitar]
Jason Cooper (1995 - Current) [Drummer]
Porl Thompson (1976 - 1979) [Guitarist] (1983 - 1993) [Saxophone] (2005 - current) [Guitarist]

Laurence Tolhurst (1976 - 1989) [Drummer, keyboardist]
Michael Dempsey (1977–1979) [Vocalist, bassist]
Matthieu Hartley (1979–1983) [Keyboardist]
Phil Thornalley (1982 - 1985) [Bassist]
Clifford Leon Anderson (1983 - 1984) [Drummer]
Boris Williams (1984 – 1993) [Drummer]
Roger O'Donnell (1987 - 1990) (1995 - 2005) [Keyboardist, pianist]
Perry Bamonte (1990 - 2005) [Guitarist]

Albums:
1979 - Three Imaginary Boys
1980 - Seventeen Seconds
1981 - Faith
1982 - Pornography
1984 - The Top
1985 - The Head On The Door
1987 - Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me
1989 - Disintegration (Favorite!)
1992 - Wish
1996 - Wild Mood Swings
2000 - Bloodflowers
2004 - The Cure
2008 - 4:13 Dream

Funny history with them because I actually discovered them from watching the South Park episode Super Mecha-Streisand, basically Robert Smith guest stars as himself in it, he whoops Barbra Streisand's ass and even kicks Cartman in the balls. "Robert Smith of The Cure kicks ass", so I just had to check them out after that X). And what a great idea that was. The Cure has everything from happy pop songs to break up songs to depressive well written songs and positive motivating songs. Their name really lives up to reputation for me because I'm always in a different mood every day but no matter what mood I'm in there's always an album by them that I can connect with perfectly. Most of the time I prefer their darker albums like Disintegration, The Head On The Door, Bloodflowers, and Wish but I can also get into the corny popish albums too. Also Disintegration has got to be one of the greatest albums I've ever heard, it's just so relaxing to listen to. Depressing at times but overall a great experience by the end.

Celldweller
Image
Genre:Experimental, Electronic, Industrial
Years Active:1999 - current
Origin: Detroit, Michigan, USA

Current Members:
Scott "Klayton" Albert (1999 - current) [Vocalist, programmer, remixer, everything under the sun]

Albums:
2003 - Celldweller
2004 - The Beta Cessions
2008 - Soundtrack For The Voices In My Head Vol.1

Celldweller - the versatile outlet of the artist, performer, producer, songwriter, programmer, and remixer Klayton - began as a producer pseudonym in the early 90’s. Now, over a decade later, Klayton (born Scott Albert) uses the name to deliver his vision of progressively combining multiple genres of music. Taking a unique approach to mixing styles, Celldweller fuses the electronics of drum & bass and techno, with rock and orchestral elements, meshing the synthetic and the organic, darkness with beauty, into a cohesive blend entirely its own.

I'll dispense with the detailed listing and give you a Top 12 list instead. If you're curious enough you'll look them up on your own.

1. Alan Parsons / The Alan Parsons Project
2. David Bowie / Tin Machine
3. Keats
4. Balligomingo
5. Vitas (Russian singer)
6. The music associated with Saiyuki (both the original anime soundtracks and the extra recordings)
7. Pink Floyd
8. Journey
9. Sting / The Police
10. Tom Petty
11. Robert Plant
12. Styx

This is only the tip of the iceberg of music that I like.
Don't make me go mad Sanzo on your a$$.

Another band is Celldweller, but no need to put info on that since Shatteredflame has already done so.

Was too lazy to put them up before but it needed to be done:

Zwei
Image

Genre: Rock/Pop

Female duo, Ayumu and Megumi. Very addictive to listen to, the second I was introduced to their song "Distance" I immediately fell in love. Ayumu's vocals are wonderful and uplifts your spirit, very inspiring. Megu's guitar-work is exceptional, her instrumental track, "My name is Megu" is a treat to listen to.

And personally, one of my favorites pics of the two:

ABout... hmmm... everything I can listen to and don't have to switch to the next song.

I don't play favourites in music, they changed too many times for me, so I stopped caring. It all depends on my current mood.

Adding a few more to the list:

Cynic

Image

Genre: Avant-Garde Progressive Technical Death Metal/Jazz Fusion
Years active: 1987-1994, 2006-present
Origin: Miami, Florida, USA

Current Members:

Paul Masvidal - guitar/vocals (1987-1994, 2006-present)
Sean Reinert - drums (1987-1994, 2006-present)
Sean Malone - bass, Chapman Stick (1993-1994, 2008-present)
Tymon Kruidenier - guitar, death growls (2008-present)

Discography:

1993 - Focus
2008 - Traced in Air (Favourite!)

These technical wankers released a great debut album back in 1993 and split up shortly after. This year, they came back with an amazing comeback album that totally won me over. While losing a lot of their death metal-touch, Traced in Air is an amazing album with an uncomparable style.

Gojira

Image

Genre: Technical/Progressive Death/Thrash/Groove Metal
Years active: 1996–present
Origin: Bayonne, France

Current Members:

Joe Duplantier − vocals, guitar (1996–present)
Mario Duplantier − drums (1996–present)
Christian Andreu − guitar (1996–present)
Jean-Michel Labadie − bass guitar (1996–present)

Discography:

2001 - Terra Incognita
2003 - Maciste All Inferno [EP]
2003 - The Link
2005 - From Mars to Sirius
2008 - The Way of All Flesh (Favourite!)

Gojira are another pretty unique metal band with influences and crossovers from many genres. Their music is quite heavy but still contains a lot of catchy rythms with precision drumming, unusual song structures, start-and-stop riffs, and breakdowns.

Agalloch

Image

Genre: Atmospheric Folk/Dark Metal
Years active: 1995–present
Origin: Portland, Oregon, USA

Current Members:

John Haughm − vocals, guitar, drums
Don Anderson − guitar
Jason William Walton − bass guitar
Aesop Dekker − drums

Discography:

1999 - Pale Folklore
2001 - Of Stone, Wind and Pillor [EP]
2002 - The Mantle (Favourite!)
2003 - Tomorrow will Never Come [EP]
2004 - The Grey [EP]
2006 - Ashes Against the Grain
2008 - The White [EP]

It's quite obvious that I'm a sucker for unique and experimental metal bands. Another band creating such atmosphere are Agalloch. Agalloch play beautiful atmospheric music with influences ranging from neofolk, post-rock, black metal to doom metal with themes like atural beauty and allusions to ancestral Heathenry.

Novembre

Image

Genre: Progressive Doom/Death Metal
Years active: 1990 – present
Origin: Rome, Italy

Current Members:

Carmelo Orlando - guitar, vocals (1990-present)
Giuseppe Orlando - drums (1990-present)
Massimiliano Pagliuso - guitar (1997-present)
Valerio Di Lella - bass (2008-present)

Discography:

1994 - Wish I Could Dream it Again
1997 - Arte Novecento
1999 - Classica
2001 - Novembrine Waltz
2002 - Dreams d'Azur
2006 - Materia
2007 - The Blue (Favourite!)

Novembre are a doom metal bands mixing clean vocals with Death growls switching from italian to english lyrics. Their music is heavy and imbuing, but they are able to create such a beautiful and melodic sound, it's simply amazing.

Shining

Image

Genre: Black Metal
Years active: 1996 – present
Origin: Halmstad, Sweden

Current Members:

Niklas "Kvarforth" Olsson (a.k.a. "Ghoul") - vocals, guitar (1996–present)
Fredric "Wredhe" Gråby - rhythm & lead guitar (2006–present)
Peter Huss - lead & rhythm guitar (2005–present)
Andreas Larssen - bass (2008–present)
Rickard "Rille" Schill - drums (2008–present)

Discography:

2000 - I: Within Deep Dark Chambers
2001 - II: Livets ändhållplats
2002 - III: Angst, självdestruktivitetens emissarie
2005 - IV:The Eerie Cold
2007 - V: Halmstad (Favourite!)

First Thing to mention is that This Band is really f*cking crazy. Shining openly promote suicide and self-harm in all its forms, thus often get labelled as Depressive- or even Suicidal Black Metal. Their live performances contain large amounts of self-mutilation that they invite the audience to take part in.

Besides these, Shining are amazing musicians that deserve a lot of respect, definitally not for their doings, but for the music they create.

They play a form of black metal that incorporates many doom metal elements and progressive song structures creating an experimental and unique atmosphere. Their latest full length album "V: Halmstad" is for me, personally an amazing and mindblowing album, which is only the 4th album that was ever able to impress me so much to give it a full 5/5 rating.

Blind Guardian
Image
Genre: Progressive Power Metal
Years Active: 1985-Present
Origin:Germany

Members:

Hansi Kursch (Vocals All years, Bass 1985-1998)
Andre Olbrich (Lead Guitar All years)
Marcus Siepen (Rhythm Guitar All years)
Frederick Ehmke (Drums, 2005 - Present)

Discography:

Battalions of Fear (1988)
Follow The Blind (1989)
Tales From The Twilight World (1990)
Somewhere Far Beyond (1992)
Imaginations From The Other Side (1995)
Nightfall In Middle Earth (1998)
A Night At The Opera (2002)
A Twist In The Myth (2006)

As for a favorite, with the exception of the first two, they all are. There's just something about each one that makes it great and unique, and I just can't pick one. I discovered Blind Guardian when I was 16, I downloaded Bote's War of Wrath, and I just kinda exploded into it from there. I had started listening to 1980s Metallica, and I had started getting into metal, and Blind Guardian is probably why I still love the stuff today, because they opened up the entire thing for me. I don't listen to them nearly as much as I used to (when you have weeks of music to listen to, you tend to not listen to any one thing too often), but their impact on myself and my life is undeniable and unavoidable. They're part of what made me who I am today.

Týr
Image
Genre: Progressive Folk Metal
Years Active: 2000-Present
Origin:Faroe Islands

Members:

Heri Joenson (Guitars, Vocals)
Terji Skibanaes (Guitars)
Gunnar H. Thomsen (Bass)
Kári Streymoy (Drums)

Discography:

How Far To Asgard (2001)
Eric The Red (2003)
Ragnarok (2006) Favorite
Land (2008)

My friend randomly Ordered Ragnarok about a year ago now, we both pretty much spooged when we heard it. I immediately ordered my own copy and got caught up slowly over the course of the year. They're a very unique folk band. No cheesy keyboard synths, just straight up guitars drums vocals and bass. They're probably the most "honest" about it, as well, since they use melodies and traditional pieces from their homeland as a basis for many of their songs.
