Maximum the Hormone

Image

Genre: Metalcore, Punk, Pop

Members: Maximum the Ryo (マキシマムザ亮君, Makishimamu za Ryō-kun) – guitars, vocals
Daisuke-han (ダイスケはん, Daisuke-han) – vocals
Nao (ナヲ, Nao) – drums, vocals
Ue-chan (上ちゃん, Ue-chan) – bass guitar, backing vocals

When I was first introduced to this band, I was immediately blown away. It was pure amazement and I delved more into their works, fallen in love with them upon each listen. Their mixture of metal, hardcore, punk, and pop sounds is simply unique. I like pop and rock music and finding a single band that mixes these two genres together so beautiful is gold to my ears. A band that's so full of energy, I can barely sit still while listening to them, I need to see them live.

Genre: Metal, Rock

Members:Vocals: Jyou (ジョウ)
Guitar: Miko (ミコ)
Guitar: Omi (乙魅)
Bass: Naoto (猶人)
Drums: Mally (マリ)

I was on the look out for female vocalists in the japanese visual kei culture and came across this all-female band. When I blurted out to a friend of mine, "I would make love to the actual song" whilst listen to 'Under mind', I knew I was hooked. Smooth vocals mixed with guttural screams is amazement.

Utada Hikaru

Image

Genre: Pop

A woman with a beautiful voice. I've listened to quite a bit of pop artists over the years and very few has stunned me to the degree that she has. Her live performances are one of the very best.

TWO-MIX

Image

Genre: Electronic Pop

The duo that got me into music period. Without them, I would have just thought music to be boring for a longer time and wouldn't have bothered with it. Upon first hearing the likes of 'Just Communication' and 'Rhythm Emotion', I was taken aback and my views on music were changed.

Yay for shoegaze!

My Bloody Valentine

Image

Genres: shoegaze, dream pop, noise pop, post-punk

Members:
Kevin Shields
Bilinda Butcher
Debbie Googe
Colm Ó Cíosóig

Years active: 1984–1997, 2007 - present

Besides from being the band that gave the world a whole genre of music known as 'shoegaze' and their classic album 'Loveless', they're also exposing their fans to noise as loud as fucking possible on their live gigs (*points at the 15~30 noise trance holocaust in You Made Me Realise*) and catchy pop melodies carried through Bilinda's and Kevin's breathy vocals and melancholy lyrics. The genre "shoegaze", characterized by loud guitar noise, buried melodies and dreamy vocals, was later developed further by other bands and the genre soon expanded.

Anyhow, I'm completely blown away by their music, most notably on "Loveless" that practically re-invented guitar, noise and pop music :P "Only Shallow", "To Here Knows When" and "When You Sleep" should be able to carry anyone with their noise bliss. If you're a fan of alternative rock music, pop, or whatever, just music in general, this band should not be missed! ;) The band reunited in 2007 and is now recording a new album and touring.

Slowdive

Image

Genres: shoegaze, dream pop, noise pop, space rock

Members:
Neil Halstead
Rachel Goswell
Nick Chaplin
Christian Savill
Adrian Sell (drums, 1989)
Simon Scott (drums, 1990 until early 1994)
Ian McCutcheon (drums, 1994 onwards)

Years active: 1989 - 1995

Slowdive is propably the second most popular band of the early 90's shoegaze spree. Heavily influenced by classical and ambient music, Slowdive drop the faster-paced pop hooks and the hardcore noise of MBV and focus on dreamy soundscapes and lingering melodies. Their music is atmospheric and spacy and covers a heartbreak or two with their sad themes. My favourite album by them, and just one of my favourite albums in general, is deffinitely 'Souvlaki' (yes, named after a kebab!) that makes me feel like I'm floating in space in a melancholy tube.

Lovesliescrushing

Image

Genres: shoegaze, dream pop, noise, noise pop, ambient, lo-fi

Members:
Scott Cortez
Melissa Arpin

Years active: 1991 - present

This is the project Scott "the new Kevin Shields of MBV" Cortez is propably the most known for. Together with the vocalist Melissa Arpin, they create propably the most blissed-out music on earth  They use shoegaze and dream pop as the ground for their music but left conventional song structures and focus on blissful ambient carried with Scott's super-experimental guitar work and Melissa's breathy, often wordless vocals. They use some electronic altering and sampling nowdays but on their earlies albums "Bloweyelashwish" and "Xuvetyn" (favourite!) the only main instruments used are guitar and vocals. The guitar is often so tuned and effected inside out that music critics thought the sound was produced by a keyboard. Cortez used many instruments such as vibrators and forks to alter (and abuse) his guitar. And what makes it even cooler is that the music is all recorded with a 4-track tape recorder in a bedroom studio :P

For fans of bliss-out angelic yet noisy ambient eno-influenced music.. 'Nuff said..

Astrobrite

Image

Genres: shoegaze, noise pop, noise, power pop, dream pop, ambient, lo-fi

Members:
Scott Cortez
+ collaborating artists

Years active: 1994 - 1997, 2007 - present

Astrobrite is propably one of the noisiest bands you'll ever hear and if Lovesliescrushing isn't enough to make Scott Cortez a guitar genius, this project serves that purpose more than enough. Recorded in his bedroom studio, Astrobrite takes noise levels to the maximum and shoegazy fuzzpop onto whole new levels. The result is a ridiculously awesome experience :P Just take any Astrobrite album and listen to it through just to get into noise trance with catchy and uplifting riffs. This band also provides the cheesiest, most uplifting and improvised lyrics ever, if you can depicher them from all the soothing chaos that is :P

STAR

Image

Genres: shoegaze, dream pop, noise pop, power pop, lo-fi

Members:
Scott Cortez
Shannon Roberts
Theodore Beck

Years active: 2005 - present

STAR is the third notable project from Scott Cortez (surprise  ) STAR is the most "pop" of the three with it's short and often linear songs and catchy hooks. The vocals here are actually depicherable and the lyrics are bitchy, all provided by Shannon Roberts, who makes the band female-fronted. However, the guitar noise is there but it's more rhythmic and less extreme or distorted. A recommended listen :P

Medicine

Image

Genres: shoegaze, dream pop, noise pop, power pop, lo-fi

Members:
Brad Laner
Beth Thompson
Shannon Lee
Jim Goodall

Years active: 1991-1995, 2003 - present

Oh hell I've been introducing bands no one really really cares shit about and wasting my time but this is the last band.. at least for now >_>

Medicine was the American response for the mainly british shoegaze movement. The music has a lot in common; the songs are often full of distorted guitar noise and soft vocals. However, Medicine always seemed to me as more generic noise rock/pop than shoegaze. The albums "Shot Forth Self Living", "The Buried Life" and "Her Highness" push the limits of how distorted and noisy a guitar can get but also provide hell of a lot of catchy pop tunes! "One More" is possibly the most epic pop song ever! \o/

The band reformed itself in 2003 with a new album "The Mechanical Forces of Love". A lot of the band members had changed (including the vocalist Beth Thompson) and the sound is supposed to be more electronic and lush than the earlier work. I personally don't know since I haven't listened to anything from the newer era Medicine.

Now I can't believe I spent all this time typing this out >_>

Anyhow, adding some more to mine, because I can:

Emilie Autumn

Image

Genres: victoriandustrial, gothic, poetry e.t.c.
Years Active: 2000-present
Origin: Malibu, California, United States

Albums:

2000 - On A Day...
2002 - Enchant (rereleased 2007)
2005 - Your Sugar Sits Untouched (CD and poetry book)
2006 - Opheliac (Favorite)
2007 - Laced/Unlaced (instrumental)
2007 - A Bit O' This & That

Emilie Autumn is a singer-songwriter, poet, and violinist. She has gone through a wide variation of musical styles in the past, as she went from the more classical, celtic sound of Enchant to the "angrier", violin-industrial sound of Opheliac, which pretty much happens to be my favorite. An amazing artist, do check her out.

A Perfect Circle

Image

Genre: alternative/progressive rock
Years Active: 1999-present

Current Members:

Billy Howerdel (lead guitar, vocals, bass)
Maynard James Keenan (lead vocals)
Josh Freese (drums)
James Iha (backup guitar)
Jeordie White (bass)

Albums:

2000 - Mer De Noms
2003 - Thirteenth Step (Favorite)
2004 - eMOTIVe
2004 - aMotion

A Perfect Circle is a rock band that was formed by former Tool/Nine Inch Nails guitar tech Billy Howerdel after recruiting Tool vocalist Maynard James Keenan in the late ’90s. A pretty different band from Tool despite what many say or think because of Maynard being in the band, yet still pretty darn awesome (and something I'd suggest to Tool fans either way). Their best songs are actually spread throughout the albums, but as a whole I'd suggest Thirteenth Step.

Android Lust

Image

Genres: industrial, darkwave e.t.c.
Years Active: 1996-present
Origin: Bangladesh

Albums:

1998 - Resolution
1999 - Evolution
2002 - The Dividing (Favorite)
2004 - Stripped and Stitched
2006 - Devour, Rise and Take Flight

A female in the Industrial music scene who writes all her own music, and stays with it throughout the entire process, effortlessly blending together many different genres of music is a rare sight indeed. Shikhee is one of these few women, and she does her job magnificently. Last.fm word stealing ftw..

But on to more metal:

Between The Buried And me

Image

Genre: progressive metalcore
Years Active: 2000-present
Origin: North Carolina

Current Members:

Tommy Rogers (vocals/keyboards)
Paul Waggoner (guitar)
Dustie Waring (guitar)
Blake Richardson (drums/percussion)
Dan Briggs (bass guitar)

Albums:

2002 - Between the Buried and Me
2003 - The Silent Circus
2005 - Alaska
2006 - The Anatomy Of
2007 - Colors (Favorite)

Between The Buried And Me is a progressive metalcore quintet from North Carolina, infusing a wide array of genres like soft rock but remaining metalcore for the most part. I'm a bit neutral on the first two albums, I do love Alaska but with Colors they just made one of the best fucking albums I have heard (at least from my point of view). It is also worth noting that though many of you won't even have heard of them, they have one of the best drummers alive.

Opera IX

Image

Genres: black/gothic metal
Years Active: 1988-present
Origin: Italy

Current Members:

M The Bard (vocals)
Ossian (guitars)
Vlad (bass)
Lunaris (keyboards)
Dalamar (drums)

The awesome member that shouldn't have left: Cadaveria (vocals)

Albums:

1995 - The Call of the Wood
1998 - Sacro Culto
2000 - The Black Opera - Simphoniae Misteriorum in Laude Tenebrarum (Favorite)
2002 - Maleventum
2004 - Anphisbena

Opera IX is an Italian Black Metal band with Doom, Death and Gothic influences. The band reached the awesomeness-peek with The Black Opera cd, which was simply amazing, and lost its worth for me after Cadaveria left for "not being religious enough" (eh?).

It is also worth noting that Opera IX not only is a musical concept but a marriage of Art and Religion where a strong and straight lifestyle prevails on the daily life of modern man.

Opera IX walks along the occult roads of the old Pagan knowledge throughout meditation and rites. They explore the dark meanders surrounding men, travelling through old legends, forgotten traditions and superstition. The real essence of Opera IX is hidden in their lyrics and the music they compose.

So yeah, do at least give a listen to The Black Opera for it's just an amazing cd..

And oh, what did I save for last.

Dark Tranquility

Image

Genre: melodic death metal
Years Active: 1989-present
Origin: Gothenburg, Sweden

Current Members:

Mikael Stanne (vocals)
Niklas Sundin (guitar)
Martin Henriksson (guitar)
Martin Brändström (keyboards and electronics)
Anders Jivarp (drums)

Albums:

1993 - Skydancer
1995 - The Gallery
1997 - The Mind's I
1999 - Projector
2000 - Haven
2002 - Damage Done
2004 - Exposures In Retrospect and Denial (Compilation CD) (Favorite)
2005 - Character
2007 - Fiction

Dark Tranquillity is a melodic death metal band from Gothenburg, Sweden. They are one of the longest-standing bands from the Gothenburg metal scene and one of the pioneers of the melodic death metal genre. A simply astonishing band and probably the best in its genre's history, I don't have much to say on them because the music should pretty much be able to speak for itself..

Ok I give up for now, I spent too much time on this..

Stolen Babies

Image

Genre: avant-garde metal with dark cabaret influences
Years active: 2002-present
Origin: United States

Current Members:

Dominique Lenore Persi (vocals, accordion)
Rani Sharone (bass guitar)
Ben Rico (keyboards)
Gil Sharone (drums)

Albums:

2006 - There Be Squabbles Ahead

"Once upon an awkward adolescence, there was a girl that tripped often and spoke very little, a boy who ate too much junk food, but spoke a lot, and his identical twin that hit things and spoke even more. Then along came a pianist with very wiggly fingers and a baseball bat. Hence…the musical misadventures unfolded." As soon as I read that, I knew this would be interesting. And it was. This album will never get old for me - this is one of the craziest albums I have listened to and their awesome sound and songs structure REALLY got me addicted quick. Definitely worth your time if you're into.. crazy stuff. =)

Hehe, Nice Going :o Lots of Bands I love myself have been mentioned. And now to add something new to the pot:

Amon Amarth

Image

Genre: Melodic Death Metal/Viking Metal
Years active: 1988–present
Origin: Tumba, Sweden

Current Members:

Johan Hegg − vocals
Johan Söderberg − guitar
Olavi Mikkonen − guitar
Ted Lundström − bass guitar
Fredrik Andersson − drums

Discography:

1996 - Sorrow Throughout the Nine Worlds
1998 - Once Sent from the Golden Hall
1999 - The Avenger
2001 - The Crusher
2002 - Versus the World
2004 - Fate of Norns
2006 - With Oden on Our Side
2008 - Twilight of the Thunder God (Favourite!)

I've actually just recently got into this Band, but they're amazing. For Long Time I knew them but never really payed attention, just with their new release "Twilight of the Thundergod" I finnally decided to give them a listen. And I definitally don't regret it. I am thinking about seeing them live soon (together with Slayer, Mastodon & Trivium). And as I have seen on their Live DVD; Their Live Shows are pretty awesome too :o

Words of Farewell

Image

Genre: Melodic Death Metal/Symphonic Death Metal
Years active: 2006–present
Origin: Marl, Germany

Current Members:

Alexander ''Alex'' Otto - vocals/bass
Philipp ''Vyl'' Olivier - lead guitar
Erik ''EG'' Gaßmus - lead guitar/backing vocals
Nils Urginus - rhythm guitar
Leo Wichmann - keyboard
Felix ''Flixx'' Greiff - drums

Discography:

2008 - Ashes of the Coming Dawn (Favourite!)

I've loved this Band since I first heard 3 of their songs on their myspace site. And I was dying to finnally hear a full album. And then after a long wait they finnally released their EP "Ashes of the Coming Dawn" and I was blown away. It's a great Debut EP and I wish this Band the best Luck to receive more popularity, because they totally deserve it.

Black Light Burns

Image

Genre: Industrial Rock/Alternative Metal
Years active: 2005-present
Origin: California, USA

Current Members:

Wes Borland – lead vocals, rhythm guitar, keyboard, programming
Nick Annis – lead guitar
Sean Fetterman – bass guitar
Marshall Kilpatric – drums, percussion

Lots of you probably still know We Borland as the 'weird alien guy' in Limp Bizkit that totally didn't fit their Image :P Well, this Guy is Wes Borland, a great Guitarist at that. After having left LB he was searching a long time for a singer to start a new band, but without Luck, UNTIL he decided to be the singer himself. And that was probably the best Decision he ever made, because he's got a great Voice. With Black Light Burns he finnally started a new Band and broke free from Limp Bizkit's chains and finnally does what really fits him.

Yeah, somehow we never get around to make Bandphotos might be because I hate posing. But check our MySpace, there are some new live pics, which are pretty good in my opinion.

Hopefully we'll make some Bandphotos when the new EP gets released.

Guess I'll take a small stab at this...

Alkaline Trio
Image

Origin:McHenry, Illinois, USA
Genre:Alternative rock,Pop punk, Punk rock
Years active: 1996–present

Current Members:
Matt Skiba
Derek Grant
Dan Andriano

Discography:
1998 Goddamnit
2000 Maybe I'll Catch Fire
2001 From Here to Infirmary
2003 Good Mourning
2005 Crimson
2008 Agony & Irony

Probably one of the first bands i grew up listening to when my interest in music peeked. Was an old friends favorite band so it rubbed off on me, their older stuff has some good lyrics to it so its not that bad the newer material does not have the same feel though.

The Distillers
Image

Origin: Los Angeles, CA
Genre: Punk rock, Street punk
Years active: 1998–2006

Former members:
Brody Dalle
Tony Bradley
Ryan Sinn
Andy Granelli
Rose Mazzola

Discography:
2000 The Distillers
2002 Sing Sing Death House
2003 Coral Fang

I actually found their self titled CD on the ground at my old junior high so it was a random listen but became one of my favorite bands. I guess its the rebel in me and the fact the girl has a strangely grungy voice that makes me like this band a lot.

Tiger Army
Image

Genre
: Punk rock, Psychobilly
Years active: 1995 - present

Members:
Nick 13
Geoff Kresge
James Meza

Discography:
1999: Tiger Army
2001: Tiger Army II: Power of Moonlite
2004: Tiger Army III: Ghost Tigers Rise
2007: Music from Regions Beyond

One of the first bands I have ever heard live, though the audience booed them i ended up buying the Music from Regions Beyond CD. Its not as psychobilly as their older music ended up being but it was still very well done to me. Their live performance was not that bad either but they wanted their old punk music

In no order and there are plenty more these just have the most notable reasons to why i favorite them.

Needed to add:

Angela Aki

Image

Genre: Balladic Piano Pop

I can't remember exactly when I first listened to her, I gave her album Home a bit of a listen and liked it but then went on to other artists. Then after a while I didn't know what to listen to and figured, since I liked her album already, I could listen to it for a bit. And then I was hooked, I couldn't get enough of her. Fell in love with her operatic voice and skills with the piano. She's as amazing as Utada live, maybe a bit more. Plus I have a thing for glasses ^-^

Taia

Image

Genre: Rock/Metal

Recently discovered them a few days ago and immediately, I was intrigued. Only managed to get their second album, Seeds of Rain, but at this rate I will be getting the first soon. Due to their looks, their sound took me by surprise, heavier than I expected. However, amazing vocals and the guitars are mind-blowing.

unicorn table

Image

Genre: Electronic Pop

So, there I was at an anime convention walking about minding my own business when my ear is practically assaulted. I spun around intrigued at whom the assailant was and thus came upon unicorn table being blasted through stereos and their live performance from the night before on the TV. Deciding to buy the CD, I was pleased to discover how much I enjoyed it.

One of the Bands that climbed up my charts at an almost unbelievable speed. When I heard the very first song (which was the first track on TGCD) of them, I instantly Knew, they'll become one of my favourite Bands, as I felt exactly like I felt when I first heard Opeth. An Amazing band with an interesting, quite varied Discography and a great development, especially due to their singer losing the ability to do harsh vocals (what imo didn't hurt the band at all)..

This japanese experimental trio surely does have an amazingly huge and confusing Discography (so huge I'm not even sure if I listed all their releases above [besides the Split's which I left out intentionally]). Respect to anyone able to get all of their releases, as there are even multiple recordings of albums released in different regions of the world :P

Lots of Releases with lots of different Sounds, a band that just wont let theirself stick into some kind of categorisation. Their music will slowly arouse your eardrums until they almost burst into a million pieces... truly mindblowing stuff

Varg

Image

Genre: Pagan Black Metal/Viking Metal
Years active: 2005–present
Origin: Coburg (Bavaria), Germany

Current Members:

Draugr - Vocals (2008-present)
Philipp "Freki" Seiler - Electric & Acoustic Guitars (2005-present)
Hati - Guitar (2008-present)
Managarm - Bass (2008-present)
Silvester "Fenrier" Grundmann - Drums (2005-present)

Discography:

2007 - Wolfszeit
2008 - Schildfront (Split with Minas Morgul)

Unlike the two Bands above, Varg (Varg means "wolf" in both Swedish and Norwegian) are a rather young band with a still small discography. With their Debut "Wolfszeit" they already threw out a kickass Album, but with the new Members and the split release "Schildfront" they totally surprased any expectations :amv:
