Looking for Some Bass.

Postby DTJB » Mon Jun 16, 2008 5:03 am

Looking for music with some bass guitar. Doesn't have to be the prominent instrument in the song, just has to be a major highlight. Any rock or funk tune will do.

I can think of a couple of bands off the top of my head. Lets see... there's Black Tide, Disturbed, Dope, Godsmack, Korn, Linkin Park, Nine Inch Nails, Seether, Sevendust, System of a Down and Tantric. Those bands usually have a good amount of songs with a strong bass player.

Well, Rancid's Maxwell Murder is probably one of the best known. It has a Great bassline throughout and then a pretty bitchin' solo.

ALOT of stuff by RHCP (Red Hot Chili Peppers)

Decent amount of Older stuff (like first 3 or 4 albums) from A.F.I have a lot of good bass to. Other then those.. I don't really know major specific Examples, Except I suppose the band Maximum the Hormone often has really bitching bass parts to...

Faith No More, definitely. "Falling to Pieces" is a great bass-driven song. Obviously Primus the other main candidate. I know you've heard Megadeth (let's say "Peace Sells"), but their first couple albums had some amazing bass that often goes overlooked (too bad Ellefson isn't with them anymore). As far as more classic rock, Yes ("Yours is no Disgrace," "South Side of the Sky," or... anything) has probably my favorite bass work, followed by Zeppelin ("Livin' Lovin' Maid") and then Rush (anything).

One of my personal favorite bands, Porcupine Tree, gives bass credit without being crazy about it. Very simple, good stuff, almost like McCartney bass but I think more pronounced. I'd recommend Lightbulb Sun and In Absentia for albums. "Hatesong" and "Strip the Soul" being great examples of strong rhythmic bass riffs.

Band called Riverside also has some cool bass moments. I'd check out "Volte-Face" and maybe... "Second Life Syndrome," but it's a long one.

And of course, Iron Maiden. One of the few bands whose founder/main writer is the bassist.

The band Gordian Knot, created by bass player Sean Malone is a great listen. To this day, I still love the track "Muttersprache" from their album, Emergent.

Anything by the band Primus, fronted by bassists/singer & composer Les Claypool, may be all the funk you need.

And then there's Conception. Their last album, Flow, features a lot of dominant bass in the mix. A few of their past albums might have some bass-centric tracks as well.

RHCP - Otherside
Great low-key, but effective bass playing

Dir En Grey - Cage
Strong, punchy bass w/ a decent solo

Asian Kung-Fu Generation - 遥か彼方
Yes, the song loved by Narutards everywhere, but the bassline is pretty decent

L`Arc-en-Ciel - Stay Away
Great bassline that pretty much carries the song

RATM - Born As Ghosts

Ah, thanks for the reminder. The intro to their cover of "Higher Ground" really gets me pumped up. I really need to give Flea another listen.

But who's buying? :D I'll be sure to give some of their other stuff a shot.

Uh...could you romanize that for me?

Interesting list and thanks for the suggestions. I'll try to listen to as much as I can.
