QTrax - Free and Legal ??

Postby TaranT » Mon Jan 28, 2008 2:54 am

But still with DRM. This is the same QTrax that shut down a few years ago, but is now "new and improved". And apparently backed by EMI, Universal, Warner and others.

It's P2P-based and only available for Windows XP/Vista users. Mac OS/X users will be able to connect in a couple of months.

And for anyone who doesn't like to read, Qtrax also tracks ALL of your downloading needs, meaning if you download from emule? It'll know.

Looks like a scam: Record Giants Pull Out
...Warner Music said it had not authorised the use of its tracks by Qtrax - and later Universal Music Group and EMI followed suit, saying they did not have licensing deals with Qtrax and discussions were continuing.

A QTrax spokesperson maintained that certain deals are in place, and that QTrax staff "still feel they have the backing of the industry."

A picture is emerging that while QTrax is in talks with the labels and may have made progress in some cases, deals have not actually been signed. The company appears to have misrepresented the state of the deals in order to make its announcement during the Midem conference. As a result, it may end up paying the labels a lot more than it would have otherwise (this sort of stunt hardly strengthens one's bargaining position).

Mods: maybe change the topic title to "Free and Legal ?? - Qtrax". Or something else.
