But mostly they come for the pulsing techno music known as the Balearic Beat. It's everywhere — on the radio, in bars and clubs, even on remote beaches.

The island is home to some of the most famous nightclubs in the world in summer, and most of them cater to fans of house and trance DJs from Britain, Spain, Italy and the U.S. Sasha, Carl Cox, John (sic) Oakenfold and Frankie Knuckles and other luminaries regularly play to crowds here.

The sexed-up Balearic Beat has gripped European youth the way hip-hop has taken over the pop charts in the U.S. Here are four reasons why: Privilege. Amnesia. Pacha. Space.

These Ibiza super-clubs are the four horsemen of la madrugada, that uniquely Spanish period of revelry between midnight and whenever, usually sunrise.
