Easy there Damian, first of all, for a goth you have no idea what Gothic music is or who even plays it.

"black and stuff"? that was the best you could come up with to describe your true gothic awesomeness?

You are confusing Goth with Emo, it's a common misconception...I can't blame you there for just saying random crap you heard somewhere, however, this thread really is going nowhere now and whatever purpose you hoped to prove, you have failed.

"goth" as you're doing it is a fashion fad, geez. Seriously, I swear, people like this are giving "goth" a bad name. I don't know if there was ever such a thing as real goths - but if there were, they certainly weren't running around listening to pop-punk and emo.

To me, it's a crying shame when someone pretending to be all dark listens to far "lighter" music than I do - when I more or less fall under the generic definition of "hippie".

90% of those bands re: your first post barely border on rock. I'll give you Metallica and L'Arc~en~ciel as rock (Ive never heard L'Arc~en~ciel but Ive heard good things so they get the benefit of the doubt) but the rest are pure Emo, screamo and punk.

I listen to what we at the org like to refer to as nu-metal with some occasional rap/rock: ie: hatebreed, dry kill logic, 40 below summer, ill nino, mushroomhead..so forth. (yea yea I know... gimme a break) BUT notice it still has the word metal in it. This is because while not being terribly heavy nor having a lot of from the bowels groans its still heavier than your "goth" bands like GOOD CHARLOTTE and FALL OUT BOY

*sigh* .. no youre not.
ps. youre not a goth cuz you wear black and people think youre weird. (Thats attention whore... not goth.)
pps. Emo kids wear black too dont forget. (Also attention whore...)
ppps. I bet Panic at the disco and Simple plan falls under "you know the rest"

I'm sorry, but I know no "goth" who could possibly like Good Charlotte. Good Charlotte took something raw and energetic, punk, and combined it with something corporate, shallow, and catchy... pop. How is it that a goth, who generally as a rule strive for "individuality," could listen to such pseudo-rebellious garbage?

I feel that "The Sound of Muzak" lyrics are appropriate here...

"The music of the future
Will not entertain
It's only meant to repress
And neutralise your brain

Soul gets squeezed out
Edges get blunt
Demographic
Gives what you want

Now the sound of music
Comes in silver pills
Engineered to suit you
Building cheaper thrills

The music of rebellion
Makes you wanna rage
But it's made by millionaires
Who are nearly twice your age"
Kusoyaro: We don't need a leader. We need to SHUT UP. Make what you want to make, don't make you what you don't want to make. If neither of those applies to you, then you need to SHUT UP MORE.

Kid Buu: No, Goths don't have to worship Satan. But it's best if people THINK they do, it adds to the gothiness. :O

But just to continue this thread for the heck of it, lets compare some lyrics. I'll start with Type O Negative, which is a rather unique goth group who sound more like a parody of Goth metal but it still works.

"I built myself a nice little cage
With bars of anger and a lock of rage
I cant help asking whos got the key?
When I know damned well its me"
--Gravitational Constant

Okay, that was a bit emoish, but try these:

"On muddy ground - Im lying drunk on her grave
Where I must wait - until she wakes
The soil splits - greenwoods ground will quake beneath me
And so shall take - into the earth
To the green light - to the green light - baby - baby - baby"
--Creepy Green Light

Compare this to anything from Fall Out Boy. Which is more goth? Come on now.
Life's short.

Also, I'm consistently getting disappointed at the complete unawareness of the gothic by the so-called "goths".

Am I still the only one to whom "gothic" primarily associates with the architectural and art style, the tall arcs, spires and gargoyles, and all sorts of medieval lore with vampires and whatnot? For a while, there were certain types of rock/metal music that I (wrongly?) associated with "gothic" style, because thematically and structurally they were a hell of a lot closer - in fact, there's no comparison (for me) in terms of which is more gothic - complicated heavy medieval-influenced music with all sorts of dark fairy-tale thematics; or ... emo about some 2006-era kid's whining. Seriously.

I seriously need some sort of revelation to stop being disappointed in these "goth" types, and if none is forthcoming, I'm afraid I'll have to concede that there's nothing but a fashion fad with annoying eye-shade and stupid-looking nose piercings.

I don't think even you know who you are, clearly you don't know what Gothic music is...you have this twisted idea of what people who listen to Gothic music do...and then somehow you saw it fit to add Slipknot in to the whole mix. At first I suggested music that actually falls under that genre because I thought you were seriously interested and all those bands you had originally listed, were just common mistakes people make...but clearly you're stuck in your own belief and so by all means, keep listening to slipknot and wear all black, and on All Hallow's Eve day why don't you all put a drop or two of blood in to your zima and maybe fall out boy will grant you a wish or what have you.

If you think Slipknot is death metal, you know very little about metal, and are most certainly not "gothic".

We're judging you because you're here begging to be judged. We don't know you, but you come here, claiming to be "Goth", even though no such thing exists, and then list off a bunch of pop-punk bands and try to pass them off as "goth".

Then you come in and try to call Slipknot gothic metal. That's a laugh riot. Slipknot is about as gothic metal as I am a world-renowned drummer (and lemme give ya a little hint: I don't play drums).

I politely refer you to my previous "nu-metal" explanation. Also I will take the route of oto incase my explanation wasnt clear:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nu_metal
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slipknot_%28band%29
-->http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mallcore<--
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mallgoth

and no you wouldnt cut your wrists, Ive decided you're a mallcore kid; not emo.

note: I do infact like some slipknot songs, but Im not under the impression that they are remotely heavy when compared to something that is gothic metal or even generically metallic >.<

"Mallgoth"?
Brilliant!

I've never heard that term used before, but it fits perfectly - and reading the article further cements my impressions on that.

What I'm concerned about is not that people listen to Slipknot or Mall Metal or dress up stupidly and wear that eye shade - heck, they can all act like chickens and jump off bridges at random for all I care (though I'm more likely to do that myself  ). What troubles me in these patterns, and why I tend to be rather negative over the "popsification" of music culture is that these kids are actually convinced they're doing something rebellious and revoltingly strange, when in fact they're basically sitting at the end of a business chain of major corporations.

Youth culture has been a huge thing since the 60's, when we had that explosion of young people taking a leading position in culture and defining the tastes of generations. But now that the youths of that time have long grown up and taken up chairs in various corporate structures, they found wonderful ways of exploiting the system. Gradually, progressive musical and cultural movements are being dumbed down, glossed over, and then marketed in a lobotomized forms to willing "rebels without a cause". No wonder some are screaming "rock is dead"...

I'm fine when people listen to this stuff, as long as they take no pretensions. Otherwise, it's just tasteless attention whoring that makes you look bad when exposed to people with a broader and/or more developed musical/cultural outlook, since they can see right through these vain outbursts.

You, sir or madman, are not a goth. You've been played well by the great entertainment industry complex, given a nice causeless invatation to rebel against that which you don't understand, and handed diskloads of what an article might call "mall music", Flint's referenced song calls "muzak", and I call "popsa". Congratulations, here's your free Cap'n Crunch medal.

At this point, it became superfluous for those posting subsequently to identify this poster as a "mallgoth".

Emo mallgoths whine and cry about other people judging them; real goths roll their eyes and ignore external commentary...and wouldn't've come around looking for approval in the first place.

Anyway.

Just for those who want the gist of mallgoth:
mallgoth wrote:Mall goth is a disparaging colloquialism for someone who is supposedly not a "real" Goth and whose commitment to the Gothic scene is seen as poserish, i.e., shallow, materialistic, trendy, and/or dependent on commercially purchased, mass-marketed Goth clothes from high street stores such as Hot Topic. The term is mainly limited to the United States. Other terms include M&M's (for their tendency toward the music of Marilyn Manson), spooky kids, nu-goth, babybat, baby/kiddy/kinder goth, emo goth, wannabe goth or, in England, 'goffs' (note the incorrect spelling).

Typically, a mall goth is aged from 13 to 18, the attire of mall goths includes hoodies, over-sized t-shirts often bearing the name of a nu-metal band (sometimes worn over fishnet arm warmers), black leather trench coats/dusters. Baggy pants with chains on them are also common, for either gender. Dyed hair, eyebrow, nose and lip piercings, and the use of black eyeliner, lipstick and mascara is also common. Mall goths can usually be found loitering in indoor shopping malls across the United States and Canada (another reason behind the name).
ha it says mansonite further down the page http://www.waningmoon.com/gothica/articles/6660041.shtml

popular activities for mall goths are going to arcades (DDR is especially popular)
..... hey!! I am SO not a mallgoth! :( only cuz I dont listen to Good Charlotte, Im just not hardcore goth enough to listen to Good Charlotte :( ....
