Well after reading this thread again ... for the first time ... (i didn't really read it when I posted that Picture of one of LARD's Album covers) I'm slightly confused, I understand that most of the people in here like metal, but as the thread topic is "rock OR metal" I'm surprised to not see other types of rock and roll in here...
Regardless, I shall now post my top ohh i dunno FIVE bands for you to gaze upon and then subsequently disregard me as oh one of those kids who don't like METAL :\
#1 Bad Religion, (Riffs are catchy but most of all Lyrics are intelligent meaningful poignent...probably helps the lead singer is now a PHD.)
#2 Dead Kennedys (Not The fake Dead Kennedys of course, the ones touring after suing Jello Biafra :\ Jello made that band with his lyric writing, such a sharp wit, cutting to peices the hypocrasy of decades of american politics...Also singing about being Too Drunk To Fuck)
#3 Propaghandi Punk / Thrash band from Canada, Incredible, I must really check out one of there shows some day...
#4 Offspring, hell their last album wasn't great but we should always remember them for SMASH such a great album, And puts on a hell of a live show, Dexter's voice is High :O I'm also impressed he's a Chemist.
#5 I'm gonna go ahead and just put "outsider music" and let Wikipedia explain the rest
Outsider music is music performed either by social outsiders, who have no or few associates in the mainstream music business, or by musicians who choose to live and work in seclusion, often due to compromising behavioral or psychological conditions. Outsider music reflects these conditions in various ways. Lyrics are often bizarre or emotionally stark and songs may show a great ignorance or disregard for structural conventions or popular trends in mainstream music. Also, outsider musicians frequently have no formal training and/or significant music skills in the traditional sense. The end result is music that is much stranger and more abrasive than more popular musical styles.
I don't know what exactly got me into outsider music, or if it's really aplicable here. but i'd though i'd share...
If you really insist on a #5 Rock band though ... I guess I'll have to go with AFI ... Or mabey Rammstein (But not the new AFI, the new AFI makes me a saaaaaaad Panda) Also I'm not posting a picture of LARD again because as i still REALLY like the band .... all it is is Ministry with Jello Biafra as the lead singer and lyric writer... (i think i coverd Jello Biafra in #2)
