Sorry, Rozard. Never even thought about your bandwidth, just wanted to piss the baby off.

Welp, I've never seen someone ask for video clips before, so I dunno. The problem with that, though, is that most people have neither the space nor the desire to host digisubs off of their websites. If you can't afford the DVDs (Highly recommended, since they will provide higher quality clips), try a P2P program.

However, if you were flamed for asking for clips, it may be because using digisubs as source is somewhat looked down upon, for a couple of reasons.

1. Digisubs yield inferior final output quality when compared to videos made with DVD source. Everytime you re-compress a video file, you lose a little quality, especially when doing the final compression to distribution format. Since a digi-sub is encoded the same as the distribution copy of a video would be, using a digi-sub as source is essentially starting out with the lowest-possible quality source, and it will lose some more quality through the various stages of compression. For comparison, I offer these two images.

Image Image

In the image on the right, which is taken from my very first video, made with divx digisub source, I have circled the areas where you can see color distortions and compression noise. The most noticeable ones are in the bottom of Spike's face, in the border between light and shadow. The one on the left, made with as little re-compression as possible, you can see it's much cleaner, and there is a mild color difference between the two as well.

2. The other reason digi-subs are somewhat looked down upon as source is due to the subtitles. A lot of people leave the subtitles in for some unholy reason, and it looks tacky as hell. Especially one I saw, where the subtitles where in Chinese (possibly Korean, but I am sure they were not Japanese), so it's just pointless.

The subtitles are a bitch to remove, and many people don't see the need to bother. I only had to bother once, in one scene in the aforementioned video, and that was an unholy experience.

The primary reason is the quality of the source, though. It's always nicer to look at a video where the image quality is clean and crisp, versus one where everything has random color artifacts in every area of subtle gradiation or where it's pixelated from bad aspect ratios.

And, of course, there is the whole legal area, where fansubs of US-licensed series are technically not supposed to be distributed. Technically, I shouldn't have been able to download the digisubs I made that video with, as the distribution should have ceased once it became licensed. Many people look down on downloading as an alternative to buying, because it's essentially stealing. Myself, I only download to preview, never as an alternative to buying.

Digisub vs. DVD...

Have you SEEN the newest digisubs being released by "talented" digisubbers?

They ARE DVD rips and at resolutions like 640x480, and EVEN HIGHER, using them for source becomes more and more easy. Can't edit the subs? Why would you? [unless you go for lip synch which I've avoided for obvious reasons]

Digisubs [unlicensed] are AWESOME source and don't let the "1337" stop you noobs from trying. [digisubs were my first and I still stick by it...] Need proof? Watch my "Gimme the Beat" or "Onegai Teacher" amvs and make sure you're not drunk. Extreme "poorly encoded"? I think not... The only way the video would be flawed is if people don't follow the current guides (which quite frankly work fine with digisubbed footage. "Fire of Man's Desire" is and still will be my best example... :p

(I've recieved email asking for "raws" of Hanaukyo Maids .vobs... Go figure...)

^_^

So to all you peeps who say digisubs suck, go out of your freakin' shells and buy a freakin' clue will ya?

[btw, I'm working on my first DVD ripped amv which is domestically released. The digisubs I have were unlicensed at the time of their creation.]
