I agree on larc~en~ciel. For example Ready Steady Go might probably make a really good amv :)

Asian Kung-Fu Generation also got some nice songs that I believe should suit an amv really good.
I also believe Janne Da Arc and Psycho Le Cemu would be great.

For the extremely passionate hardcore metal types... NAIAD! I know, I know... I talk about 'em too much...
Be non-conformist! (Everyone's doing it!)
I guess Max Payne isn't much of a yaoi fan...

personally, the only larc~en~ciel song that I like is ready steady go!

I've seen some good things using T.M. Revolution

I'd have to listen to more of her music, but I think Nami Tamaki could be good for amvs...

My favorite right now is Yoko Kanno...not really a band, but her music is so good! examples include opening + closing themes for Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell (Stand Alone Complex [1st gig]) opening theme, and RahXephon opening theme
I'd really like to get my hands of some of her music...

If the Upbeat/Rhythm award at Otakon 2004 was any indication, then yes. :P

(That's just one example; I know there are a whole bunch of other good videos with her music.)

But I thought she was more of a J-popper...?

While I'm not entirely sure where in the J-music scene they fall...
There's not enough JAM Project videos, dammit!

Ellegarden continues to be woefully under-AMVed. For shame.
