Techno?

Postby akatoro » Mon Oct 21, 2002 9:52 am

Usually I strongly dislike techno/trance/rave but I found this real good song the other day.

*Warning for curses*
It is called: DJ Paul vs. The Headbanger - Your mother sucks cocks in hell

Incase you haven't seen the movie, they've ripped sounds and dialouges from the movie 'The Exorcist'.
Reel good party music =D

Yeah... The term 'techno' is a kind of a catch-all term and is often misused. When people talk about 'techno', they could mean anything from industrial to drum+bass to ambient.

Well, part of the problem in people overusing the term is that so many of the branches of electronic music are intentionally obscure and not very newbie-friendly. When one is new, or talking to someone who doesn't know any of what you're talking about, saying "Techno that sounds like _____" is a good bit more simple than saying "Techrave jungle D&B hop spin ramalamadingdong."

And more likely to get your point across. ;)

I'm not remotely a techno fan (I know where the shift button is on a keyboard, and I don't use drugs), but I do like a few artists which I think are classed under trip-hop. Oh well, can't keep me out now. ;)

I think my problem is, Techno is a stupid word in using to describe music that is more "technological". Electronica is a better word to generalize with, since, all "techno" is electronic, but not all "techno" is so technologically advanced in this day and age.

Chemical Brothers are Drum and Bass
E Nomine is dance/rave

myself, I'm an IDM fan ^^

I agree with Zerophite. It's like just calling a certain type of music 'Rock', but there's Progressive Rock, Pop Rock, Soft Rock, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, Power Metal, Death Metal, Speed Metal....you get what I mean right?

These 'Sub-genres' are really helpful in classifying an artist's style. I think one of the hardest artists to classify though is DJ Krush. His type of music is something I call 'Blind', meaning that his music shifts and twists so much for one song to another on most of his albums, that you can't really classify him.
But I had to I'd go with Trip-Hop/Jazz/Ambient/Drum&Bass....and the list goes on :P

Yeah... 'Electronica' is a much better general term for the genre than 'techno'.

[quote="Zerophite"]Chemical Brothers are Drum and Bass
quote]

Chem Bros.? When I think of drum n' bass I think of Photek, Roni Size, and even a lot of Squarepusher, but the Chemical Brothers? Big beat, maybe, but in the 3 albums of theirs that I'm familar with, I haven't heard any drum n' bass.

I normally try not to get into petty arguments like this about who's making what kind of music, and so forth, but you know this music better than most people I know, and I want to know what you're thinking of here.

As for techno, I still use it as a catch-all term with some of my friends who don't listen to much music. But I think there was a time that it actually meant something. When I hear early 90's songs like "Speed Racer" by Alpha Team, "Bomb Scare" by 2 Bad Mice, "Trip II The Moon" by Acen, "James Brown is Dead" by LA Style, or even "Charly" by the Prodigy, I think, man that was techno...

Also, these would all make for good AMVs. At least I think they would.
