Flaming Lips

I picked up Yoshimi a couple weeks ago and was pretty durn impressed, so I indulged and got The Soft Bulletin last Thursday. OH MY GOD, WHY DID I NOT BUY THIS ALBUM SOONER!? I'm still bathing in the brilliance of it. Swoon, swoon.

Needless to say, between this and the new Bob Schneider TX-only release, I've got AMV ideas out the wazoo now. Sigh. Looks like I'm destined not to hang up my editing hat yet after all.

Anyway, I just wanted to ask two things:

1. Any other Lips fans in here? I'm a very recent convert, although I've liked them for about 5 years, I never really sat up and paid attention until this year. Which older albums would you recommend most highly?

and

2. (I know a-m-v.org has a search function for videos, but... it doesn't work in MSIE5 for OS9 [For some reason, the pulldown menus aren't clickable for me], and my Win98 machine is down, or I wouldn't be asking this. My apologies.) Does anyone know of any good Flaming Lips AMVs? If so, could you please provide a link? I'd like to see what others have done with this music.

I just checked and it doesn't look like there are any in the DB... :(

Hmm... now I am going to have to go find some of their music to check it out!

Oh yeah, if your browser is a lil biatch remember that in the search section you should be able to abuse the 'super search,' which allows you to just type in the band name.

... although there are pull downs there also... at least their default is 'all'

They're pretty good. I also like some of the Mull Historical Society. You may like them too if you haven't heard their stuff already.

I actually haven't heard that much. But I've liked all of it. There's just so much music to like I haven't been able to listen to any of their music extensively. If all their stuff is a good as what I've heard and as what you say, I think I'll need to put them on my list of music to buy next time I have money :) . Which isn't often... :cry:

Wow...I drop by here maybe once a week and post a half dozen or so replies to threads. I hate to sound snobbish but I generally find most of the music discussed here to be boring as snot. Then I scroll down and see...The Flaming Lips? Yes!

I love this band. I really do. I've got Transmissions From The Satellite Heart, The Soft Bulletin and Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots. Not an impressive collection considering that they've put out about 10 albums, but I've really only been listening to them for about a year. Have you heard "She Don't Use Jelly"? That's probably their most famous song, and it was actually a really huge hit on radio and MTV about 8 years ago. Maybe you already knew this, I don't know, but I thought I'd mention it anyways. That song is on Transmissions and I'd definietly recommend that you get it before you buy any other albums. It's such a great record, less electronic than their last two but infinitely more psychedelic and odd. The second track on that album, "Pilot Can At The Queer Of God", is one of the loudest rock songs I've ever heard. I mean, it's not metal or anything, but just the way that it was recorded makes it sound absolutely deafining, even at a low volume.

I saw The Flaming Lips about 2 weeks ago in Chicago. They were touring with Cake, De La Soul, Modest Mouse and Kinky (The Unlimited Sunshine Tour, it was called). Their set was the most stunning performance I've ever seen. There were people in animal suits around the edges of the stage waving flashlights around and the craziest videos I've ever seen during a concert playing in the background the whole show. It was such an incredible experience. Wayne Coyne looked so happy to be on stage, and he was constantly grabbing confetti out of a box, leaping into the air and heaving it as far as he could throw it. He looked like a man possessed, really, especially when he grabbed the smoke machine off the floor and spun around with it during "Race for the Prize".

They're touring with Beck this fall, so find out when Beck is coming to town and you'll probably catch them too. Email me if you want to know anything else about them.

I live to serve. :D (Actually, I just have no clue what most of the popular bands are these days. I'm living in a little hole underground with my CD collection.)

Oddly enough, I really dug Zaireeka - we could only listen to 3 of the discs at once, though - and then promptly forgot about the Lips until I heard Ben Folds' hilariously schlocky cha-cha cover of "She Don't Use Jelly" last year.
Thanks to a fellow Cowboy Bebop fan and music enthusiast, I got some recommendations and info and got around to buying Yoshimi and Soft Bulletin, the latter being one of the BEST albums I have purchased in the past 2 years, (the others being a compilation of Motown-influenced Brazilian music, Avalanches' Since I Left You and Spiritualized Ladies and Gentlemen we are Floating in Space).
I'll have to check out Transmissions next. (Note for next paycheck: Transmissions, Das EFX, and MO's 10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1)

YOU LUCKY BASTICH!! :P I *desperately* wanted to catch that tour but it came nowhere near me. To add insult to injury, I had to be out of town the night De La Soul played at Stubb's. ARGH.

I am going to see the Beck/FL show by hook or by crook! Must! Must!

As soon as AWA is over and I get the DVD I need, I plan to start work on a Flaming Lips video. Argh... they made me put my editor's hat on again!

I've always wondered what The Flaming Lips sound like. I've never just listened to one of their songs though. After hearing them, I have to say that personally, I like it, but it's not my favorite. I think they sound like a cross between Coldplay, Stereolab and Stone Temple Pilots. This is just based on what I've heard from them. What I've heard I've really liked, "Do You Realize?" being my favorite thus far. That groove is so infectious! I still feel, though, that I haven't heard the song that will hit me over the head and make me say "WOW!". What song do you think would do this?

As for a suggestion of music to someone else, I recommend ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead. While I really like their stuff, some people probably would dismiss their music as overbaring guitar cacophony. If you wanted a taste of their music, I would suggest "Another Stoner Morning," "Relative Ways," and an interlude "The Day The Air Turned Blue." The last one is a piano playing a hauntingly beautiful melodic line, accompanied by a small string section. Well, if you decide to check them out, tell me what you think! ^_^

Source Tags and Codes is one of the best albums I've heard this year. Have heard nothing else from And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead..., not yet anyway. Funny that you kinda compare Stereolab to The Flaming Lips, as Stereolab are one of my favorite bands, ever. Hope to see someone make a video for one of these bands soon.

While we're tossing out relatively unpopular bands, anyone heard of Add N to (X)? Kinda like a cross between Stereolab, music of 50's sci-fi films and perverted early industrial music. I have to review their newest album for the paper I work for. Now they'd make for an interesting AMV.

Wow, Big Big Truck, you've heard Zaireeka? That's so cool. I guess it's kind of hard to find 4 CD players to play it on - well, I guess that's not quite so difficult in 2002. Having to borrow a stereo from someone turns listening to it into an event you can share with others, not just yourself, which is cool. But my next Lips album will be Clouds Taste Metallic.

Yeah, a friend of mine picked Zaireeka up back around Christmas 1999, and a bunch of us held a little listening party in her kitchen.

Picked up Transmissions from the Satellite Heart Friday since Tower had it for $7 - also grabbed 10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1 by Midnight Oil. Both were excellent, judging from what I could pick out from the road noise (took a trip to Houston this weekend).

I like some Stereolab, but I gotta admit I was pretty disappointed with Space Age Batchelor Pad Music. Half the tracks really appealed to me and the other half repulsed me. (Shamefully enough, I have yet to pick up my own copy of Dots and Loops.)

Trail of Dead is pretty popular here in Austin... I don't care for them that much, but then all of the stuff I've heard of theirs has been the radio hits popular with the Linkin Park set.

Add N to (X) sounds totally up my alley... I was on a big Combustible Edison & Esquivel kick until just recently (which gave way to a Tropicalismo kick), so I'll check it out soon. Thanks for the recommendation, starwire!

Damn, I wish Audiogalaxy was still up and running so I could check more of these out. Ah well, at least my wallet is glad it's down :P

By the way - on the way back from Houston we had a little playlist going that mixed tracks from The Soft Bulletin with Dntel's Life is Full of Possibilities, Cocteau Twins Heaven or Las Vegas, and Geggy Tah Into the Oh. It turned out pretty nice; if y'all are interested, those three albums are also very very good. (Into the Oh has been in my stereo almost constantly this month.)

I picked up Hit to Death in the Future Head and The Day They Shot a Hole in the Jesus Egg (that double cd with the In a Priest Driven Ambulance and The Mushroom Tapes on).

I wasn't supposed to buy anything today... ho hum.
