Song covers

Postby Vlad86 » Sun Sep 21, 2003 1:31 am

Does anyone have a list or just know of song covers? The idea came to me when I saw the american opening for Knights of the Zodiac(Saint Seiya) and it had "I ran" by Bowling for Soup which is a cover of the same song by Flock of Seagulls. Also "Relax" by Frankie goes to Hollywood and Powerman 5000, "Blue Monday" by New Order and Orgy, "Tom Sawyer" by Rush and Deadsy, and "Paint it Black" by Rolling Stones and Gob. I personally get a kick out of hearing and comparing originals with covers. It's also neat breathing new life into old songs, but sometimes some songs shouldn't be messed with (die-hard fans of the original songs will kill ya'). Well, if anyone can think of any more than that it would be appreaciated.

I have the Zoolander soundtrack so I already know of those remakes( don't shoot me but, "Faces" by Orgy is the best song on the cd imho)

Assemblage 23 - I Ran (Flock of Seagulls)
Nine Inch Nails - Metal (Gary Numan)
Funker Vogt - Harvester of Sorrow (Metallica)
If nothing else, harsh noises get your attention.

Foo Fighters - Baker Street (Gerry Rafferty)
Travis - Baby One More Time (Britney Spears - seriously, it's good)
Pearl Jam - It's OK (Dead Moon)
Joe Cocker - With A Little Help From My Friends (Beatles)
Stone Temple Pilots - Dancing Days (Led Zeppelin)
Tom Petty - Feel A Whole Lot Better (Byrds)
System of a Down - Snowblind (Black Sabbath)

Definitely more, but I've gotta go.

There are hundreds of thousands of covers.

Blind Guardian - Don't talk to Strangers (Dio)
Blind Guardian - Beyond the Realms of Death (Judas Priest)
Blind Guardian - Surfin USA (Beach Boys)
Blind Guardian - To France (unknown)
Elvenking - Penny Dreadful (Skyclad)
Freternia - Murderer (Helloween)
Nightwish - Over the Hills and Far Away (Gary Moore)
Nightwish - Crazy Train (Ozzy Osbourne)
Sonata Artica - I Want Out (Helloween)

Personally, I think all of these covers are far superior to the original songs.

Heh... Covers are too common a thing... take ust one band...

King Crimson covered John Lennon's 'Free as a Bird' and Bowie's 'Heroes' (which, technically, is semi-cover, as both of the band's guitarists were Bowie's guitarists at different points, with Fripp being the author of the famous sustained guitar lines)

Too many people to list covered King Crimson, including Howard Stern's 'The Losers', who did 'In the Court of the Crimson King' (and later converted to Lord of the Anal Rings...)

...yeah. I know of entire sites dedicated to covers of a particular band's songs... so, like, there's no way on earth I could list all of them. ;)

Favorites:
"New Year's Day" - Front Line Assembly featuring Tiffany (yes, Tiffany) (original by U2). On the same album, Dead or Alive also did a version of "Even Better than the Real Thing" that...kind of is. Pet Shop Boys' treatment of "Where the Streets Have No Name" is also fun if you happen to like Europop. Which I do. So.

"Fly on the Windscreen" - God Lives Underwater (original by Depeche Mode). Also on THAT album was a version of "Shame" by Self that is also better than the original.

"Istanbul (Not Constantinople)" - They Might Be Giants (original by Four Lads, I believe) - Have you ever heard of the original? No. See?

"Draggin' the Line" - REM (original by Tommy James and the Shondells) - So not REM-ish, but it's kind of fun and relaxing. 8)

"Whiter Shade of Pale" - Annie Lennox (original by Procol Harum) - Her entire album Medusa is covers, and in fact one of them is the music in my latest vid *plug*

"Heroes" - The Wallflowers (original by David Bowie) - This song is one of my personal favorites, though, so I'm biased. :P

Barenaked Ladies do massive tons of covers, from "Fight the Power" back on an old demo to medleys closing their shows, and they're a lot of fun as well. 8)

The Hollies did an album of Bob Dylan songs that was pretty good. Great version of "The Mighty Quinn".

ok heres the most covered song i know

the song "circle of tyrants"

celtic frost(original)
Obituary
opeth
bewitched
mystic circle
pro-pain

lyrics

After the battle is over
And the sands drunken the blood
All what there remains
Is the bitterness of delusion
The immortality of the gods
Sits at their side
As they leave the walls behind
To reach the jewels gleam
The days have come
When the steel will rule
And upon his head
A crown of gold
Your hand wields the might
The tyrant's the precursor
You carry the will
As the morning is near
I sing the ballads
Of victory and defeat
I hear the tales
Of frozen mystery
The new kingdoms rise (By the circle of the tyrants)
In the land of darkness (The warrior, that was me)
Grotesque glory (None will ever see them fall)
And hunts and war (Are like everlasting shadows)
Where the winds cannot reach (The tyrant's might was born)
And often I look back (With tears in my eyes)
Grotesque glory (None will ever see them fall)
And hunts and wars (Are like everlasting shadows)

Barenaked Ladies - Wrong Way (Sublime)
Cake - I Will Survive (Gloria Gaynor)
Foo Fighters - Tiny Dancer - Live (Elton John)
Guns N' Roses - Cats in the Cradle (Cat Stevens)
Guns N' Roses - Knockin' on Heaven's Door (Bob Dylan)
Guns N' Roses - Live and Let Die (Paul McCartney)
Jimi Hendrix - All Along the Watchtower (Bob Dylan)
Johnny Cash - Hurt (Nine Inch Nails)
Metallica - Die, Die My Darling (Misfits)
Boy Sets Fire - Rocketman (Elton John)
Pearl Jam w/ Neil Young - Like a Hurricane (I think it's Bob Dylan)
The Ataris - The Boys of Summer (Don Henley)
Pennywise - California Dreaming (Mammas and the Pappas)
Save Ferris - Come on Eileen
The Specials - Maggie's Farm (Bob Dylan)
Eric Clapton - I Shot the Sheriff (Bob Marley)

If you hunt around, you can find a bunch of Foo Fighters, Barenaked Ladies and Incubus covers. Just have to look in the right places.

I like the Dylan covers a bunch. Guns N' Roses always did really good covers, too.
