sad news for metal fans

Postby Kai Stromler » Mon Jun 02, 2003 12:37 pm

Matt Barlow has left Iced Earth to finish his degree in Criminal Justice Administration and get a desk job in the Department of Homeland Security.

Here is where I heard it from (scroll down a little), but it'll obviously be all over the place presently.

I'm torn. On the one hand one of my fave bands is coming apart at the seams, but on the other hand, I'm relocating to the Midwest in a few months, by which time I might be able to train my voice into shape to give my demo a chance at the slot.

Overall it still sucks.

Awww shit!

Oh well, I say they could do better than Barlow anyway. Hell, Schaffer isn't too bad at singing. But man... I don't like this news too much. I was really looking forward to their next album, and I hate to hear that it's been delayed. Can't blame Barlow though... oh well, I know Schaffer will keep going on.

I guess the new Demons and Wizards album will be coming out before The Glorious Burden. :?

Not a necropost....a necessary followup

Postby Kai Stromler » Fri Aug 01, 2003 8:12 am

Sorry to drag this thread back up, but it keeps people's last reactions current.

Iced Earth has a new vocalist: Tim Owens, lately of Judas Priest. Here's the link to the story on Blabbermouth, which has some samples of the songs from the new record: Former JUDAS PRIEST Singer Joins ICED EARTH

Mixed feelings...Ripper's definitely got the equipment, and Jon's domination will cure him of his nu-metal-cover-band habit, but it still aint Matt, which is weird, as Matt spent more time in Iced Earth than all other singers before him combined (going back to Purgatory days), actually had a good working relationship with Jon, and sung on 80% of their best material and was re-recorded onto the rest.

I'm behind work filtering and can't check out the samples, any reactions?

Haven't been able to check the samples out myself yet either, but I'm on my way right now.

Man...I miss Barlow...BIG TIME. Tim Owens is just too fucking powermetal. It doesn't really fit Iced Earth. He does a *decent* job, but overall does NOT compare to Matt. Besides this minor drawback (for me), The songs are still amazing.

Honestly I like the samples given from Iced Earth's new album.

While Tim Owens may never fit well into Matt Barlow's shoes I am sure he can make his own mark in Iced Earth I honestly think he "could" do better than Matt Barlow since Owens has a higher pitch scream and he can do dark voices good as well.

While I still think Matt was the perfect singer for Iced Earth, but I am sure Tim Owens is good enough to take over the vocals.

My biggest problem with Tim is that he brings in too much of a Judas Priest vibe with the vocals...I was never a big JP fan.

Iced Earth isn't power metal...it's progressive. There's a slight difference. Stop talking out of your ass.

No, it's not progressive. Take the guitars for instance. The solos are generally pretty good, but the riffs are clearly power driven. He uses the same chords over and over (I love Schaffer by the way) and there isn't even an ounce of shredding on any of their CDs.

The vocals... you can't define as either power or progressive, but the lyrics are much more similar to power metal than they are to progressive.

The drums, while generally fast and powerful, aren't nearly as technical as most prog bands.

And for your information, Nailz thinks they are prog metal too. So your comment was quite undeserved.

And they aren't prog.
