I'm sticking with the older versions myself, divx 5.1 is designed not to work if a debugger is being run at all on your system. Quite annoying to have error messages for just opening an avi while debugging a program, let alone trying to debug a program that works with videos...

This worked for me with avi files that had a similar problem: open the video in virtualdub with the "popup extended options box" checked, then check "force video format FOURCC code to" box and enter "DX50". Hopefully that will work for you too.

If you follow the guides and do a 2-pass encode, you can set the file size you want. Also, make sure that you are also compressing the audio.

Just so you know, VirtualDUbMod can open Mpeg-2 videos. Thats what I use to grab clips from dvd files.

Well, I don't see why you would need full resolution always, I would just make clips with increasing images/decreasing image resolution and then use a zoom to match them up. But in either case, I can work with images of any resolution.

Also make sure you are using compressed audio, I hate it when I download an AMV only to find that the video quality is lacking while the audio is uncompressed and taking up more file-space than the video itself.
