From my experience, region 2 japanese DVDs are far better than region 1 dvds. Many of my region 1 anime dvds look attrocious, whereas the region 2 discs are pretty good. When you scale the size up, thats what its supposed to look like. Files such as divx are the same way, but they have playback filters that will smooth the picture out so it isn't blocky. I'd have to recommend against 6.5. From my experience, it has been EXTREMELY buggy. Far moreso than 6.0 was. 6.0 never crashed on me unless I did something like edit in divx. In 6.5, if I so much as scroll over the timeline too fast, it could close itself down, without even leaving me any error mess...

If they don't lag, then perhaps they consist entirely of keyframes, or have more keyframes than normal.

It's lagging because its an mpeg file. Mpeg files are not designed to be edited. This is all explained in the guide.
