New Comp Advice
OK, here is the deal:
I'm going to be working this summers at a job that is going to provide for me a good chunk of cash. For the purpouses of the rest of this post, assume that I will spend $1,700.
Alright, Here's what I was thinking: Quad RAID on 30 gig disks. Do you think I will need the full 8 MB cache if I do this? (assuming I will be messing with HuffYUV and the like) What about speeds of those disks, will 7200 be significantly better (assuming the RAID)? Can you guys recomend RAID cards that have worked well for you, or that you've heard about? What about HDDs? Which brands do you like?
After that, I was thinking either DMP on AMD procs, probably only 2 GHz. Is that going to be enough to run AVS files at normal speed you think? What about the mother board in that case? Is it expensive? Is DMP worth it? Otherwise I was thinking a single 2-3 GHz AMD. Would Intel be significantly better?
What can I do about the PCI bus bottlenecking the RAID? Will it be a problem?
About capture: Is a pinnacle card really worth ALL THAT CASH? Assuming I do mostly DVD work anyway, is it worth my time and money? If not, assuming I'm not a big gamer, what card to you guys recomend?
Also, do you think I should go Windows 2000, XP, or stick with 98? I know I can't do 98 with DMP, but either way, which do you guys recomend?
Any other coments regarding a new system? I'd love to hear all of your comments!

AMD all teh way if you want power and a good price. INtel's too expensive, save your money for better stuff.Ashton wrote:After that, I was thinking either DMP on AMD procs, probably only 2 GHz. Also, do you think I should go Windows 2000, XP, or stick with 98?
No Win98, maybe for dualboot, but WinXP is probably your best compatibility choice. I would also recommend Win2000 if you really like to work.

Actually, case was one of the only things I DIDN'T ask you about.

I know, but I saw that and was like "WOW" so I posted a pic
besides...
Go with an AMD Hammer cpu.
I would think it would be best if you just stuck to IDE. Get two or three 60-80 Gig HD's (good RAID controllers cost quite a bit, not to mention the extra cost per HD on SCSI drives)
Win XP has worked beautifully for me, but others seem to dislike the OS. I think 2000 would be a good choice over 98.

As of now I would say...Ashton wrote:Any other coments regarding a new system? I'd love to hear all of your comments!

Ok.. well... I would love to save the money and go straight up IDE but you see I simply can't. I want to get a MCUH faster transfer rate, and RAID will give me that. I could go SCSI, but that is way expensive. RAID cards are selling for under $100, and those are even some of the good brands. I think it's well worth my money so long as I'm not bottle-necking on the IDE bus. So that is the question: will it bottle-neck? A friend said if I did DMP it wouldn't, and I didn't understand why that would be, but that guy knows ALOT more than I do about computers so I trust him, but what do YOU guys think?jonmartensen wrote:I know, but I saw that and was like "WOW" so I posted a picbesides...
